Default 'True Grit' (1969) - High-Def Digest Review

E has reviewed the original 'True Grit.' He says this John Wayne classic is still a lot of fun. This Blu-ray features nicely cleaned up video and solid audio, but a disappointingly sparse collection of extras. Worth a look.

Judging by all the screencaps I have seen there is some very obvious DNR. Not enough to be a dealbreaker for me, but frustrating nonetheless. Gonna pick this one up eventually, but will wait for sub $10 pricing because of the DNR.

I've posted numerous comments about this release in the other thread, but bottom line is the following--

1. it is a big upgrade from the dvd
2. it is based on a dvd master which has some definite dnr on it which is very noticeable in medium and distance shots on the bd
3. it is not a total dnr disaster by any means, and overall the picture is not bad by any reasonable standard which takes into account the fact that it not based on a new master.
4. if Paramount released all their JW classics just like this I would be satisfied because I don't expect them to create new masters for these films.
(not saying I would be thrilled, but I would accept the big upgrade nonetheless)

I too bought this. Will be taking it back and possibly re-buying when it hits a better price point. For those interested, "True Grit" will be on TCM HD tomorrow night (Wed 12/22) at 7 central time.

interesting to compare the blu ray to the hd telecast,,both were well done with the HD telecast slightly cropped on the sides....the blu ray is not perfect, then what is these days when releasing older films..picture quality is very good and sound is mainly fronts with clear dialogue...being a fan of this movie i am happy with it..paid 15 at B&N.....I laughed out loud at some of the Duke's lines.....fun movie, good western, good time

go see "a fat old man sometime"..recommended!

I picked both up yesterday, so it will be interesting to watch them back to back.

Been awhile since last time watching this on DVD, was pleased with the BD PQ. Must say that I prefer this classic version over the new one.

Never noticed how Kim Darby resembled Justin Beiber until my girlfriend pointed it out.

The Edge Enhancement is annoying.
