i've been waiting for this review.

as always, terrific stuff E., glad you got one of your favorites on Blu.

i love the film as well. a little less than you but nonetheless, i've seen it twice in 5 months and am still hungry for more though, i'll probably get that fix when i get back to finishing the extras..

a stone cold classic with the amazing Robert Mitchum.
god I hope Warner eventually releases some of the other classic Mitchum film noir films like "Out of the Past" or "Angel Face".
Blu-ray desperately needs more film noir releases, as they are, in many critics' opinions, the greatest American contribution to world cinema.

yup. there's something about noir that just gets me every time. i always say that my two favorite genres are crime and psychological, but if i had to pick one, specific, non-broad one, it'd be noir.

with that said, i haven't even heard of 'Angel Face' but now i can't wait to see it.

Night is a tremendously entertaining film. While I enjoy the entire film, the shot of Shelley Winters has stuck with me since I first saw it at 10 years old.

I'm to see Criterion gave it the proper attention.

I'm PISSED I did not pick this up with the B&N Criterion special. I'm wondering if I didn't because its price compared to Amazon's was not that far off and I hesitated to wait on it. I'll eventually pick this up for my collection.

I totally agree with the reviewer and all here that have responded. NIGHT was long-needing the treatment it received from Criterion. I first saw this movie on dvd back quite a few years ago and it was full-frame (if I remember correctly). Then not long ago it played on one of the hi-def DirecTV channels (probably HDNetMovies or MGM-HD) and what I saw completely blew me away. It was in hi-def, the correct aspect-ratio, and it looked beautiful. I said to myself back then when it comes on blu-ray, it's mine on day one. And it was courtesy of B&N through their "almost" half-price sale.

I have to also agree with Arkadin especially on Out of the Past (one of my favorite film-noir classics). And if I might add one other favorite of mine that has Jimmy Cagney yelling "Top of the world Ma" and I don't know if it's considered noir or not but it's great. The title you ask? White Heat. My personal list goes on and on especially films from Warner and Fox as well. Which reminds me of just one more. Darn it if I can remember the title but it has a real psycho in it that pushes a lady in a wheelchair down a flight of stairs. That scene shocked the sh*t outta me when I first saw it especially that the film was made in the 40s or 50s. The actor became well known after this film but I'm drawing a blank as to his name. But I betcha someone here will know the film I'm talking about.

Anyway, I'm thrilled NOTH has been released and that this site has given it a proper review.

This has long been a favorite of mine from many local TV showings (with commercial breaks) and eventually the less than stellar DVD. However, I too failed to order it during the B & N sale. Then I read all the superlatives about it on other forums, (and the documentary sounds amazing!); so I paid Amazon's current price of $24.99 and now count myself fortunate. I received it yesterday and will watch it over the weekend.
