Default 'Mad Max' - High-Def Digest Review

El Bicho has revisited 'Mad Max' on Blu-ray. Aside from a few good action scenes, he says this isn't the best of the series, not by a longshot. This Blu-ray features good video, adequate audio, and a few extras (though they're mixed between the BD and the DVD). This is a rental.

Many people, myself included thought this was the best of the series. Not over commercialized like the others. It had it's own unique style which made it more fun to watch. Day-1 buy for me.

More on the audio from IMDB.

The version released in the U.S. was re-dubbed with American accents. It has been widely claimed that the distributor, American International Pictures (AIP), feared that American audiences would have had problems understanding the thick Australian accents spoken by the actors. However, now that the original track has surfaced Stateside, it is revealed to be poorly mixed, with the music score often overwhelming dialogue (the very important conversation between two doctors that Max overhears is almost entirely drowned out). AIP's releases were predominantly seen in drive-in theaters (where in fact most of this picture's US box office revenue was earned) and where at this time the audio came through little speakers hanging on the car windows. This would definitely have made the audio problems worse and is the probable motivation for the alternate audio track (AIP having mostly American voice actors available to them).

thanks Foxy, that's good info.

I don't agree that this is the best of the series, it falls in the middle for me due to some of the slow parts feeling a bit dragging, but it's by no means the weakest in the series IMO.

I was hoping to enjoy the Autralian accents as well, but maybe not now.....

I think the review is pretty spot on. The weakest will always be the messy third. However, this isn't an awful film. Certainly an interesting film, but clearly surpassed by it's very awesome and classic second.

Quick question... Is Max's police superior supposed to be gay? He comes across as a masculine gay biker.
