Default 'Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence' - High-Def Digest Review

Our review of 'Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence' has been posted. El Bicho says this Criterion Collection release is well worth a peek. With strong video, improved audio, and a few solid extras, this is worth a look. Fans should be happy with a purchase.

One of the Criterion sale items at Barnes and Noble right now. I think $19.99

About the use of David Bowie playing a teenager in the flashback (which the reviewer disliked) I thought it was there to give the flashback more of a surreal "memory" type of quality, and as such it worked very nicely.

Great film, anyway, a personal favourite. So unique.

I really like Tom Conti in this, for me he stole every scene he was in. The ending with Takeshi was very moving thanks to their rapport and all that remained unstated.

The music is also great, though it does sometimes feel out of step with the film itself--I had long since first heard, and appreciated, the theme with David Sylvian's vocals, unaware of the connection to any film, so that may have influenced how I heard it.

More distracting for me than the flashbacks was the artificiality of the night scene lighting. I liked the look, but it didn't feel quite right. I enjoyed this much more than I expected to.
