Default "Full Metal Jacket" - Anyone else disappointed?

I picked this film up on BD the other day mainly because WB had it on for $19.99 as part of some sort of promotional pricing program. I already knew the transfer wasn't the best but the price was pretty good so I picked it up against my better judgement. What a disappointment. The word "bad" best describes the PQ.

I've always liked the film but never the home video release versions of it. I recall the SD DVD version only came as a full screen transfer... you couldn't buy it in widescreen. Now the BD version is widescreen but the PQ is far from good. I wonder if "Full Metal Jacket" will ever get the transfer attention it deserves.

yeah, it's not the best transfer, but I believe that Warner did their best with what they had. The master probably didn't get much love over the years.

Movies are so rarely great art that if we cannot appreciate great trash
we have very little reason to be interested in them.

I would have to agree with this movie and some of the other older movies. Movies like 12 monkies and Blazing Saddles just don't look the best in HD. Now is it because of how it was filmed or are companies just not putting much time into transferring them is the question.

I think the grainy, gritty quality of the PQ on this film is very fitting. I havn't seen the master nor have I talked to Kubrick and his DP to know their aesthetic intentions, but I don't think a slick, uber-processed, highly plasticized spiffing up is the style of this flick. "Optimizing" it for HD like that is a spit in the face of this movie. It will never be a PotC or Casino Royale and it very well shouldn't be.

Sure it's not reference quality showcase material to show off hi-def, but I'm of the opinion that it looks very film-like and it shouldn't be any other way.

Yeah one would think Kubrick intended it to be that way. It fits the film.

That being said, I haven't purchased it, and I'm not sure if I would. I rented it from Netflix and I've watched it on Showtime HD, just not sure if I'll upgrade to the Blu-ray or not.

Blazing Saddles looks amazing. It looks like it could have been shot yesterday.

Grain I would have expected... and with the vintage of the film, kinda looked forward too. This is something above and beyond grain. This may be an odd but fitting comparison... my wife recently picked up the BD for "Dirty Dancing" (a film from '87, like "Full Metal Jacket"). I was impressed with what they did with the image. There was the expected grain from the film stock but the picture, itself, was really quite good. The impressive quality of the Dirty Dancing image had me thinking "well FMJ can't be that bad if they can do such a good job with this one". Lo and behold... no, FMJ was just bad. There are some scenes that were acceptable but most, especially with high contrast shots, had noise (not grain).

They could have done a much better job... I hope this can be corrected in the future. I have seen what can be done with films of this vintage in terms of transfer quality and Kubrick's film deserves better.

I guess, I've just seen better transfers in the newer movies is all.

I'm holding off for the Kubrick box set later this year.
