Default Troubles with Casino Royale

Just picked up Casino Royale on Blu-Ray tonight. It looks fantastic! I am having a little trouble with it though.

First of all, do you need special equipment to decode the uncompressed PCM track? When I choose it, it puts out 2 channel audio, right and left. The 5.1 track sounds much better. What's the deal?

Also, although the back of the case lists an impressive list of subtitle languages, only Thai subtitles are in the list when I choose subtitles on the disc. While it is cool to have Thai subtitles, I want the other languages too (especially Spanish). What is going on?

First, PCM 5.1 is already "decoded". You just have to pass it via HDMI to a HDMI-Audio capable AVR.
Second, i suppose you now use the optical output of your PS3. In this case, only 2 channels of PCM pass thru as the specs for said cable do not have more bandwidth.
So, in order to benefit from the PCM 5.1 you need to buy a new HDMI capable receiver (same as i did a few weeks ago, the Denon AVR-2307).

Got it! Thank you for your help, I appreciate that. I guess it will still be a little while before I can get the true benefit of my uncompressed audio.

Am I the only one who has had trouble with the subtitles only being available in Thai? I have tried everything I can think of, still only Thai subtitles...it doesn't make sense!

How strange - I never noticed that before. Yes, you're right - only Thai for subtitles. I guess since it has French & Spanish audio in addition to English they didn't need much for subtitles, but Thai is a strange choice. I love Thai food, but will pass on Thai subtitles.

As for PCM, I assume you're using digital optical for audio? Optical has a max bandwidth of 1.5mbps which is fine for DTS & Dolby Digital plus, but uncompressed PCM is 6.9mbps, so it is down mixed to only 2 ch. stereo on digital optical. If you're not ready to upgrade to a receiver with HDMI your other choice would be to go with 5.1 analog cables, but then you would have to go with a stand alone player as the PS3 doesn't have analogs. I went with upgrading my receiver.

I will pass on them too...they sure look cool, but I can't read Thai. Why this is bothersome to me though, is the back of the box claims that there are subtitles available in "English, English SDH, Chinese, French, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, and Thai." However, I only see the Thai subtitles available to choose. All of the 4 audio tracks are available to me, however. I would really like to have the subtitles for English and Spanish available to me, but they are not even an option....is this an error for the PS3 specifically? I can't figure out why the other languages are not in the menu.

I only have Casino Royale from Sony as part of the european "payback" for the PS3 Launch. So, i have been hearing only german DD 5.1 and german PCM 5.1. I only need subs on some US titles.

Some people, (and I have done this as well, I think it works well), will use PCM even though it only comes out in 2.1? and then let Dolby Pro Logic II do the mix. I think you get better clarity than with the lossy Dolby Digital.

Hey, guys, thanks again for the help...unfortunately, I realize now I don't have the equipment to truly enjoy lossless audio...I'll have to live with the 5.1 soundtracks for now, which still are pretty good. I am very happy with my Night at the Museum disc, which comes with a lossless DTS track (my receiver decodes DTS...hooray!).

I figured out the subtitles on Casino Royale. I can access them simply by pressing the subtitle button on my PS3 remote until I get to my desired subtitle language...they are just not available in the menu for some reason. Odd, but as long as I can access them, I won't complain.
