I think why a lot of people would elevate it beyond pornography is that is completely un-erotic. The goal of porn is to give you a boner, but that's the last thing that Oshima was trying to do with In The Realm Of The Senses. He set out to push the boundaries of censorship and taboo in Japan, not to make a porno as BambooLounge suggests and the sex serves the story, not the other way round as with porn.

Whether In The Realm Of The Senses is a good film is, however, a discussion for another time.
That is a good distinction between "traditional" porn and this film. Although, when you say "sex serves the story" in porn, doesn't sex serve the story in a film whose sole purpose is to show graphic sex in order to push the boundaries of censorship and taboo? Sure the goal is to push boundaries and not primarily to get people off, but isn't that sort of just like porn with lofty ideals? The film is not one where there is a lot of sex, but a larger story going on or larger point being made. The story is that of an extreme sexual relationship between two people that features a ton of sex made for the purpose of showing hardcore sex and graphic imagery (aka pushing boundaries).

If the classification of it as porn then only turns on it being "erotic," I think that is a falsehood b/c porn comes in all shapes and sizes and not everyone finds the same type of porn erotic. I personally did not find this film erotic, but there are enough porno variants that I can certainly see someone watching this as a primarily a porn even as extreme as it gets.

Also, it does not help when the DP of the film states that the director was intending to make a pornographic film.

My wife & I aren't HUGE moviegoers, so most of our purchases are blind buys...We only go for movies that REALLY excite us (Transformers, Iron Man, 007, etc.)

Off the top of my head, our biggest regrets over the last couple of years on Blu...

+ Shoot 'Em Up --- Horrible movie. Satire and over the top acting didn't work well for this film. The best part of the movie? Monica Belluci.

+ No Country for Old Men --- Not sure why people are in love with this movie and I don't understand the immense amount of hype. It was okay, but one of the best of the year? No.

+ Avatar --- Horrible acting. Horrible storyline. Waste of a few hours. I am not drawn to a movie for things to just look good - Avatar provided no connection beyond the gorgeous PQ.

+ Crank --- I like Statham and I like Amy Smart. I hated this movie. Over the top, not funny, lame action, lame story. Yuck.

+ The Assassination of Jesse James --- Fell asleep half way through. Tried finishing the next night, fell asleep again. Tried finishing it during the day on a Saturday and shut it off out of pure boredom.

+ The Blind Side --- Didn't hate this movie, I just was disappointed after the immense amount of hype. After the movie, I didn't think about it again - kind of a "so what?" movie.

+ 2012 --- Worst disaster movie ever. Cusack can't act. 'Nuff Said.

+ Couples Retreat --- Didn't laugh once. NOT. ONCE.

+ Spread --- Anne Heche being nude could not save this stinker.

Yet you're drawn to every Michael Bay movie ever made. How does that work?

Bridge to Terabithia.

Thought it was just really boring. Not a terrible movie but I couldn't see myself watching it ever again. That buy is a large part of why I don't blind buy anymore.

One I "almost" blind bought but glad I never did, Drag Me to Hell. It was just slightly amusing, not what I was expecting from the hype.
