'Starship Troopers' -- pre-release buzz

Yet another new announcement from Sony (who are really cranking 'em out for Q4):

http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/starshiptroopers.html

It's due October 16, along with another Paul Verhoeven title, 'Hollow Man.' No specs yet, but stay tuned...

Anyhow, I am very excited about this. How it can top the Superbit will be interesting.

Angelous 07-30-2007 07:09 PM

This will most likely be the first Blu-Ray I'll have bought outside of the six free blu-rays I'm getting with my PS3.

JohnC 07-31-2007 05:11 AM

That's a must buy for me. Shame the screwed up with the sequel.

is the sequel worth watching? just for laughs even?

taygan315 07-31-2007 07:26 AM

On the fence about this one. I will wait and see what Pete thinks of it.

I regret ever watching it. It's that bad.

dans1994 07-31-2007 11:00 AM

Come On Sony and Fox, Lets release something real

Bond 1-20, release the Connery ones at least. Starship Troopers not my cup of tea.

ccphilly1984 07-31-2007 11:13 AM

well thats one morre blu-ray for me... if only it were hd-dvd or sony got off their butts with bd-j and ineractivity features.

DrMaustus 07-31-2007 12:34 PM

Yeah, I think this movie would be a perfect use of the HDI (or whatever that feature is called on HD DVD discs) functionality. When the narrator asks "Would you like to know more?" You could click an icon or something to get some background information, etc.

legal beagle 07-31-2007 12:56 PM

I just hope the Pic and Auduio quality are up to scratch. The Patriot DC was very nice indeed but got Final Fantasy this morning and the video quality is weak. Very soft Pic quality... :-/

I couldn't get through more than 20 mintues of it, and I tryed hard too. It is by far the worst thing I've ever seen, nothing to laugh about. None of the same actors either just to let ya know.

theflux 07-31-2007 01:03 PM

I loved this movie, and will definitely check it out on Blu-ray.

Never bothered with the sequel though.

you should see the Bond movies making their way to blu-ray next year

I love the Connery ones but I also love the Roger Moore movies, especially Moonraker, Live and Let Die, For Your Eyes Only and View to a Kill.

TD's Licence to Kill is also brill.

Aareco 07-31-2007 02:05 PM

Mine has just been shipped from sendit.
Got a release date of the 6th here in the UK so looks like i might get it a little ahead of time.
Will review it as soon as it gets here and will post my views in enoize's tier thread.
Again this is the Region B version but i doubt if there is any differance to the Region A version

They have different distributors - Disney in the UK, Sony in the US - so differences are possible.

Remember that the UK edition of Traning Day is VC-1 and the UK Rocky Balboa is MPEG-2 (and looks great). The US versions were MPEG-2 and AVC respectively.

Thanx Kid Banana,didn't know that.

Will look at the distributors if we here in the uk get them before the usa.
Looking into getting a few region A movies myself.
I got to take note of release studio's as i know a few of them are not enforceing the codeing 100% at the moment.

Yeah the problem is they won't be released until November 08 (market tie-in to Bond 22), probably those same 4 sets at $100-$125 each. Unfortunately we may get the same exact version (although 1080P) from the ultimate edition. The UE of Goldeneye was butchered (cuts on the OAR of 2:35), compare that to the old Special Edition release and you will see what I mean. Looks like Sony and Fox will be lazy and not fix anything (Also flaws on the Spy Who Loved Me UE vs. Old Special Edition for the worse).

Who is distrubuting the old bonds? Fox? I have the UE's and I noticed the Fox logo on the box. I think Sony does a better job.

How so Sony and Fox? MGM are responsible for those DVD's and I think they did a tremendous job, but will be even better in 1080p

All films were scanned at 4k by Lowry Digital.

Mi Casa Multimedia Inc did all the audio remastering.

http://www.mi6.co.uk/sections/articl...emastered.php3

Quote:

Score

Original masters from the films only had mono dialogue, music and sound effects - so how can 5.1 surround sound tracks be created? The answer came in the shape of original scoring session at Abbey Road Studios, London. A cornucopia of tracks and formats have been reshaped to form polished surround sound sound by using clips and segments from unused recordings to patch up the original masters.

Faults such as crackle, hiss or other areas of low quality in the original tracks have been surgically replaced with pieces selected from up to eight hours of original session recordings. Messing with a classic Bond film will have most fans gritting their teeth, but this clever use of unused takes keep the soundtracks authentic, without the need to synthesise replacements.

Effects

Unlike the music tracks, the special effects could not always be put into the surround environment without some artistic licence. Some spot effects and sounds had to be recreated or added as new by specialist group "Lunatek Music" to deliver a rich surround sound track.

Due to the technical restrictions of the old formats, low frequencies which went unnoticed would spoil a modern digital surround track, so many of the deep bass noises have been altered or added as necessary. At the other end of the spectrum, for similar reasons, gun shots and tyre screeches have been dialled down. The larger dynamic range of the modern technology should provide an exciting new dimension to the audio special effects, but Bond purists need not worry though, as the original mono sound track will also feature on the DVD so you can switch back to the original traditional if you desire.

Audiophiles may like to know that Mi Casa selected the brand new Bryston SP 7.1 multi-channel preamplifirer/processors for use in the James Bond remastering project.
I think they'll be fab on Blu-ray.

delanewf 07-31-2007 09:52 PM

I love Starship Troopers. Not as great as Robocop but still great social commentary under the over the top gore. I just hope the PQ and AQ are great.

Arkadin 08-01-2007 10:18 AM

OOOOOOOOPS!!! This title has been postponed. way to get our hopes up Sony!

Patsfan123 08-01-2007 11:00 AM

I don't know how you announce something on a Tuesday, and retract it by Wednesday morning... Whats the deal here? Critical information in 24 hours that postpones something you probably have been working on for months??

krammer 08-01-2007 12:27 PM

Probably will get pushed back to Oct 23rd. Why not? ..everything else is being released that day. Save your pennies!

Angelous 08-01-2007 01:45 PM

Damn it Sony, I want this title!

Spideybat 08-01-2007 01:50 PM

Glad I didn't sell my Superbit just yet. I hate the word "indefinite".

messin18 08-01-2007 05:04 PM

Why can't they get their shit together. Why annouce it and days later delay it?

Detroit Tigers Fan 08-01-2007 05:15 PM

Damb! I was looking forward to getting this soon.

Godstar 08-01-2007 05:33 PM

Ug, that's aggravating....they should just not annouce stuff till they're 100% damn sure it's coming out.

I totally agree. I even pre-ordered it.

Aareco 08-01-2007 07:05 PM

It has been released here in the uk mines been shipped.

I doubt it is region locked,so those of you who cant wait !!!!!! you could always try the uk shops. You get them a tad cheaper cause you dont pay our 17.5% tax.

crazyfatrobot 08-01-2007 07:08 PM

I smell special edition upgrades. Or maybe Verhoven heard about it and protested for some reason... like maybe he was not there to supervise the transer.

I liked the sequel. It's one of the better DTV movies out there. But it's more of a monster movie and less of a war movie.

It's an interesting film, if for no reason than what they managed to do with the budget. Funny seeing a 6 million dollar film that's the sequel to a 100 million dollar film...granted, it shows, but they get a lot done given the price. but yeah, it's straight up B movie monster stuff...with the Starship Troopers sheen.

Space_Butler 08-02-2007 02:13 AM

I was browsing through the insiders thread on AVS, and someone asked about the starship troopers delay. Here was paidgeek's response:

"Next year". Gentlemen, ready your stranglin' hands, because SOMEBODY is gonna pay for this.

Jakkis 08-02-2007 02:32 AM

That's a bummer, or does it include only US? Or is it worldwide?

livingproof73 08-02-2007 04:02 AM

Well that sucks donkey ass! I wish Sony would make up their minds!!!

The movie is distributed by Disney in the UK, who are releasing it on Blu-ray August 6th.
