I read the novel of this a few years ago and remembered thinking it would make a good movie, and I would say that it did. The film is a very faithful adaptation of the novel. Cianfrance manages to get almost all of it on screen without it ever feeling overstuffed or underdeveloped.

As I guessed, they chopped the rather long portion of the novel that tells the backstory of the father of Hanna (Rachel Weisz's character) and how he made his millions. And I think it was probably a good move to introduce Hanna later than the story than that part at the start of the novel where Tom saves her from an attacker en route to his posting before he would end up unknowingly raising her baby.

Fassbender and Weisz are absolutely perfect. It's like the characters just stepped off the page. They change the Isabel character to take away her goofy sense of humour. She's still cheerful, just not the zany joker she was in the novel. The mid-Atlantic accents that the actors are doing aren't too distracting. Although Vikander frequently sounds absurdly posh for a smalltown Ocker gal.

All and all, a decent drama. I think anybody who liked the novel will enjoy the film adaptation.

Watched this with my wife and we both thought it was excellent.
