I'm pretty certain it was actually inspired by the fantastic book called Replay by Ken Grimwood (which could have very well inspired 12:01 pm). I know for sure I read that Harold said this (although, you never know if quotes found on the internet are true or not).

Anyway, finally going to buy this one on BluRay, 11 bucks is cheap enough. All time classic

Interesting. According to the Wikipedia page on Grimwood, "Replay" was in turn inspired by the same 1973 short story by Richard A. Lupoff that the film "12:01 PM" was based on. So it all comes back around again.

The summary of "Replay" says that the character relives 25 whole years of his life in a loop. The premise of Groundhog Day (a one-day loop) is closer to 12:01 PM, though I suppose that doesn't necessarily mean anything about which one Ramis drew his ideas from.
