Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - March 17th, 2009

Specs and Art for the US Release (Even though the website is in Spanish)
Original Website in Spanish

Translation of the page:
"A couple of months ago we announced exclusively that Warner planned a U.S. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Blu-ray for March 17, and now we've confirmed the release in Spain as well, which will follow a few days after. A list of the technical specifications are available at this link." (Click the link within the original page to see the specs.)

It looks like the release will contain everything
from the HD-DVD and 2-disc set
with the exception of the 2-Disc DVD's set-top games.

However, the Blu-ray will ADD TrueHD audio
for this release in addition to keeping the
Dolby TrueHD isolated music track....so it will
one up the HD-DVD in that department.

I am a huge fan of both Wonka films.
I wish the other one was coming with a better restoration,
but I'm guessing they are going to hold off on that one for a while.

Isn't it too late for a release date that close?

Oops, posted wrong link.
I've corrected it above.
This one is clearly from a USA promotional ad that hasn't been released yet.

And no, I don't think it's too late to announce a release.
Princess Bride comes out the same day, and was just announced this week.

I almost HATE this one..... The original is so, so, so, so much better.

I wish we were getting the original as well, this one is alright, but the first one is great.

Dr Kain 02-07-2009 02:07 PM

The original is not even based off the book, so comparing to the two is a moot point. This one is just like the book, even takes the songs out of the book, and is awesome. Not to mention Johnny Depp is perfect for the role, and Elfman's score is phenomenal.

I like both for different reasons. Even though they are based on the same story, I feel like they are are night and day different and hard to compare to each other.

I prefer the production design/style of Burton's film, but love Gene Wilder's performance from the original. On the flip side I prefer Freddie Highmore as Charlie, and I love the scenes with the Bucket family much more in the new film. I prefer the songs from the original, but I like Elfman's background score better.

And of course, I love Christopher Lee, but the backstory on Wonka felt very unnecessary, and just padded more running time on the film's length.

Dr Kain 02-07-2009 02:15 PM

If I recall correctly though, Wonka's father is in the book, so it makes sense. The Gene Wilder version was actually based off the Broadway play version of the story, which is why there is a lot more singing in it.
