Batman: The Animated Series - HDD Review

Everyone's favorite Dark Knight rises from DVD to Blu-ray with Batman: The Complete Animated Series. This monster 12-disc set contains all original episodes of the series along with the two companion films, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm and Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero. The restoration work of the original episodes is magnificent. The new audio mix gives plenty of sonic action to each episode. And the bonus features package is an impressive undertaking, offering fans hours of content. Packed with three Funko Mini-Pops of Batman, Joker, and Harley Quinn and a set of lenticular stills, this really is The Complete Package. Highly Recommended.

WB made this announcement last year.

So Blu-ray but no 4k... Donít get me wrong, Iím excited for the release but, why not take the next step up?

gravis778 07-17-2018 02:03 PM

To answer stilt71, I had a similar thought. The real question to ask is what are they using for source? A lot of animated television shows from this time were mastered to tape, so the Blu-Ray will most likely be an upconvert (worst case scenario is they slap the entire series in SD on a single Blu-Ray disc - there are a couple of studios that do that, but I don't think WB would be one of those).

Now it is possible that this may have been digitized and is using a 2k workflow, or shot to film, or they are going back to the original drawings and backgrounds and doing fresh scans, but I wouldn't count on it. Expect this to be an upconvert.

ZERO need for this to be in 4K, IMO, given gravis's excellent post on how the show was shot.

gravis778 07-17-2018 02:07 PM

Hey, just checked IMDB, it says that it was shot on 35mm, and finished on tape. If that is the case, this might actually be a real high def transfer

Wow on film, I never would have guessed.

Yeah, they animated the series on film, hence why it is so grainy in areas. The announcement WB had made last year (it was posted on bluray.com around the time Mask of the Phantasm came out) was that they had located the original film prints so they were going to remaster those for a 2018 BD release.

So Amazon has two different listings but with the exact same info. Only difference is one says there is no date yet. Which listing is correct or are there indeed two different versions?

The only listing I see is the Deluxe Limited Edition. I would like a disc only version. I don't need all that other stuff that comes with it.
