Argo was good, but not better than Skyfall or Django Unchained.

Now I haven't seen 12YaaS yet, and I'm sure it is good, but better than American Hustle, Frozen, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Saving Mr Banks? Highly doubtful.

It is also a disservice to both the nominees and this movie that people voted for it just because they felt obliged to do so.

That would be a good blog post, as long as people aren't Oscar'd out.

Despite all my bitching, 12 Years a Slave is still a very good movie. Like others have said though, is it really the Best Picture of the Year? Not even close.
Out of all the nominations in the category...it was the best. There was not a single film in the category that was better. I saw all of them. Not one was better than 12 Years A Slave.

I loved the film. But, it's not one I'll ever watch again.

Saw this over the weekend. Have not seen Dallas Buyers Club yet...but I thought the guy playing Solomon Northup did an AMAZING AND MEMORABLE job. His performance was extraordinary, imo

Movie is a hard watch (I teared up a bit in one scene...which RARELY happens) but it held nothing back...and I liked that. Gives you an idea of what he went thru as well as other slaves. Terrible time in our history.

Having said that, 12 YEARS was in my Top 10 of 2013 list. I can't help but wonder how many people voted for it "because if you don't vote for it, you're racist." Hell, even Ellen called that out during her opening monologue. Being a member of the Utah Film Critics Association (which did NOT give the Best Picture award), we took plenty of "You Guys Are Racist Heat" for it. (See the comments here at Awards Daily.)
Oh, where are the stories/movies about Solomon Northup? I guess I missed them.

Well there was a tv movie back in '84 called "Solomon Northup's Odyssey."

Anyway I agree with the review, good movie but not quite the best IMO.

We ran a bunch of Oscar polls in the blog during the week leading up to the ceremony.

12 Years a Slave got the most votes for what people predicted would win Best Picture, but Gravity got the most votes for what people thought should have won.

We also did a Roundtable that Friday about movies that got snubbed:

That is a horrible review. 4 for this movie is unacceptable. This movie is excellent and deserves an excellent which it didn't get on this site.

I agree. I think we have a relatively weak bunch this year. 12 Years A Slave could have been better as reviewer pointed out. But out of the nominated films it was the best one. I'm not saying I'd have problem with other movies winning best picture.

Would I watch it again? Probably not. But it doesn't mean a lot though. I can say the same for American Hustle, Dalls Buyers Club, Wolf of Wall Street,...etc. About the only Blu-ray I watched more than 5 times last year was Pacific Rim. It's not Oscar quality by any means. I can't remember many Oscar winners I'd watch over and over again. I only watched Argo couple of times, once was the extended version. The only one I can think of was Amadeus, but that was 30 years ago.
