42 was a great flick, and it was better than 12 Years a Slave, but I don't think I would have picked it for Best Picture. Personally, I would have chosen Nebraska for Best Picture. That's the film that really had the most emotional impact on me.

As for 12 Years a Slave, I felt it was too cliche and heavy handed. It really didn't tell us anything new, that we haven't seen in a plethora of other films.

'42' gets narrowly beat out by 'Saving Mr. Banks' in the "Sugar-coated History Lesson Sure to Give You Cavities" category. And that's about it.

Except it being based on a true account. You know...first person.

Mr. Solomon Northup should've lived a less cliched life I suppose.

I agree. Enjoyed both films for what they are, but not the best of the year.

Movies are so rarely great art that if we cannot appreciate great trash
we have very little reason to be interested in them.

We're in agreement, except for the "enjoyed" part. They were both equally terrible IMO.

Maybe cliched was the wrong word to use here. Perhaps, I should have said that the characters were all one dimensional caricatures of what we've seen in countless other slavery films...and that just made the entire movie seem "run of the mill." As I'm sure has already been discussed, Brad Pitts' part in the movie was especially insulting. I would've liked to see him take on a more controversial role like Paul Dano or Michael Fassbender.

Spoiler
I do somewhat agree with this. He's the only kind white in the whole movie. Like he almost cast himself in that part. Also, Brad Pitt can end slavery. That should be the moral of the story here.

Exactly. That kind of robbed the movie of most of its emotional punch. I read an article somewhere, that said Brad Pitt didn't pick that role for himself, and that it was the only role left. I don't buy that for even a second.

Despite all my bitching, 12 Years a Slave is still a very good movie. Like others have said though, is it really the Best Picture of the Year? Not even close.
