I watched this last night and really enjoyed it. The movie is gripping from start to finish and the acting performances are very solid and believable throughout. PQ/AQ are excellent and cinematography is impressive. The movie takes a very realistic documentary-like approach to the showing a historical mountain climbing challenge that turns into a struggle for survival. There is a side-story involving a newspaper editor and a female beginner photo journalist who has some history and a love interest with one of the involved climbers. National pride and a battle between German, Austrian, Italian and French climbers to be the first to successfully climb the North Face of Eiger adds color to the story. There are similarities to Touching the Void but the 1930's setting and primitive climbing gear makes a difference. This is based on a true story as well.

Definitely recommended for those who like mountain climbing and/or realistic adventure movies. One of my best blind-buy imports this year for sure

I plan to get Martyrs from UK as well, but I think it's more likely to be region B locked than not since Optimum Home Entertainment is locking most of their releases.

Thanks for your impressions, I think I'll go ahead and get a copy, it sounds pretty interesting. I first noticed it when browsing through blu-rays at Amazon.de, but the UK release is a little less expensive and the German release probably won't have English subs. As for similarities to Touching the Void, I was concerned about that as I didn't really care for Touching the Void - the scenery in the Andes was nice, but I couldn't help but thinking throughout the movie how stupid the 2 guys were for climbing the mountain so unprepared; the plot of Northface sounds completely different.

Yeah, I think the overall plots are pretty different, but the style of filming the mountain climbing sequences is similar in both movies. In the extras of North Face the director noted that they drew inspiration from Touching the Void with regards to documentary-like approach to showing the mountain climbing sequences, as opposed to style used in Hollywood movies like Cliffhanger and Vertical Limit. (I watched the extras on my PC as they don't play on my main setup, being in SD PAL).

Indeed the German release doesn't seem to be English friendly, I got interested on that one first but I jumpled on the UK version instead when I saw it afterwards. The German release only came out a couple of days earlier than the UK release anyway.

Got my copy of North Face in this week from Amazon UK and watched it last night and it is fantastic. Excellent PQ and DTS Master Audio, the surrounds audio detail when they're on the mountain makes you feel like you're right in the middle of everything. Although fairly long (just over 2 hours) the pacing really keeps your attention from start to finish, and the mountain scenery is fantastic. The 1930s period setting really adds to the story. Highly recommended.
