Default My Blueberry Nights (JAP)

Sorry I tried to do a search on this, and I got more confused than when I started. First off, any plans or news to release this here stateside? I am a big Norah fan and have not seen this yet, and would very much like to invest in a blind buy. I see the UK version is region B and the Japan one is region free. What is a good price on this title? Is it worth the import? Movie? Pic quality?

Thanks, Jeff

Jeff,

I got this through Amazon U.S. about a month ago, but I see the price has gone up. It was about $45 back then and is now $54. At that time, I looked at a few Japanese sites including Amazon Japan, and it seemed more expensive to import it myself; however, I'm not that familiar with all the Japanese retailer options.

I can't comment on the quality of the Blu-Ray as I have not had a chance to view it yet. I did see the film on regular U.S. DVD months back, and I loved it. It totally drew me into its mood, at times had a nice dreamlike feel, and was ultimately sweetly romantic. I know some Wong Kar Wai fans were quite disappointed with the film, though, so maybe you might want to watch the R1 DVD first?

I haven't heard any news of a release stateside, which is a shame.

The overall image and sound quality of the Japanese disc is very high, so no worries there. It even has some decent special features, which you can use the Japanese menus to fumble around with.

As far as ordering it, the cheapest method will be the UK disc, which is around $20. If you can watch region B discs, that's the way to go. For the Japanese disc, the usual suspects are HMV.co.jp, Amazon.co.jp, and yesasia.com, and they all point to a total cost in the neighborhood of $45-$55. Amazon.co.jp will have the lowest base price, but shipping is generally higher. You can also swing some killer "buy two or three discs and get a percentage off" type deals at HMV if there are any other movies you're interested in (I suggest Trainspotting and Breaking and Entering). Truthfully, the Amazon.com price looks high, but since you don't have to hassle with anything and it has free shipping, it's not too bad of a deal, relatively speaking.

For the final decision of whether or not to buy the disc, I'd rent it first unless you can get the UK version. I took a gamble and got it from Japan before I got a region free deck, banking on my enjoyment of Wong Kar Wai's films, Norah Jones' music, the principle cast members, and the setting/style of the story. I ended up enjoying the movie a lot, but I can totally see how it could easily be a HUGE miss for some people.

I have the UK release of this and it's also a good quality release but region B locked. I was slightly disappointed in the movie itself though as I like a lot of Wong Kar Wai movies and somehow this didn't work for me as well as some of his earlier movies in terms of the characters and story. It was very nice looking from cinematography point of view though.

Thanks for all the help on this one guys... I'll have to keep looking around for a decent price on this. Also, I am sure there are threads about this, but it seems that yesasia is the most user friendly for U.S. Englishe speaking customers, are they generally reliable? If I could figure out amazon, I'd probably prefer to use them.

Edit: Amazon.jp comes out to just under $40.00, that's probably the cheapest I'd imagine with the free shipping?

Amazon Japan has free shipping only for domestic Japanese orders exceeding 1500 yen in total price. Their international shipping is a bit expensive.

www.hmv.co.jp is a good option and their site is available in English too. Their shipping is cheaper than Amazon's so if the disc prices are close HMV might be cheaper overall.

Thanks for the additional info. Never ordered from amazon.jp so I was unaware of their expensive international shipping, which would have made this over $60.00 I ended up just biting the bullet and ordered from amazon US with Prime. Very pricey at $53, but at least I know I will get it on Wed. and it wouldnt be all that much more expensive than shipping from HMV. Looking forward to getting this...

watchtower,

The price on Amazon has dropped back to $45.00 now. I hope your order didn't ship out yet.

Thanks for the heads up, it shipped out, but I'll just re-order. Prime is still good for some things

Finally got around to watching this last night, and where it starts out a bit slow, I really enjoyed this film. I admit, I blind bought primarily as a big fan of Norah Jones, and I thought Norah Jones did a very commendable job in her acting premiere. It is a great story that really highlights the struggles that lie within fighting various addictions. Glad I picked this up, havent previously seen any Wong Kar Wai's films, but I really was taken by his directing style here, and will have to look out for some of his other work.
