Default The Producers (2005) - Japanese Import

I just got this for christmas from my wife and figured since it's not talked about on any sites I'd post my two cents. The video is presented at 1080p24 encoded with MPEG2 and the picture seems very sharp and despite a poor opening sequence where colors should have popped more during the broadway sequence. Skin tones and blacks are very good and if it weren't that I feel some things should be a tad bit more colorful it would be great, especially as the film progresses after the opening scene as I've described. I give the video a 4/5. The audio consists of a 5.1 soundtrack is good during songs but for the most part is pretty quiet as it is a very talky film. There are some minor effects that make use of bass and a subwoofer but very little. The audio I'd also give a 3.5/5 as it is good but nothing to write home about. I used Rent as my comparison title for a musical which I thought was incredible. As for suppliments I can't really say what's on the disc as it is a japanese menu and I don't feel like doing trial and error at the moment to explore the disc since extras don't mean much to me on an import. If your a fan of the movie I recommend it but since the cheapest I've seen it is $50 for an import from yesasia.com you'd pretty much have to be a fan (or a gift recipient) to fully enjoy it.

I had a bit of time since my post and decided to update with what is on the disc:

The menu is the following setup:

Play Movie
----------------------------------------------------------------
Audio/Subtitle Menus (2nd Icon to the right)

Audio Options - 5.1 DD, 5.1 LPCM, 2.0 Audio Commentary with the director... she's quite annoying and talks like she's reading off of index cards like a piss poor documentary

Subtitle Options - Japanese, English, Commentary, Off
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Scene Selection (3rd icon to the right)
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Bonus Features
(to access go all the way to the right and hit that drop down menu)
First Option - Commentary

Second Option - A Blooper Reel (in 4x3 480i) - Fun to wach though, actually not forced like most now a days

Third Option - Deleted Scenes (appear to be 1080p) Featuring:
Cut Song - King of Broadway
Cut Scene with Kiss Me Feel Me
Cut Part of Unhappy
Cut Song - Old Bovaria
Cut Ending of Der Guten Tag Hop-Clop
Extended/Alternate Old Lady Land
Cut Ending of That Face
Cut Song - Rio

Fourth Option - An interview with Mel Brooks and some cast members as well as behind the scenes... also with the annoying director

Wow, I am so glad I read this thread, and thanks for the information! I love this movie, I saw the stage show 6 times and I guess I am one of the few who saw the movie. It's great to see LPCM. I wonder if, when the US versions comes out, they will do a batter job, as it looks like you thought it was just ok quality. I agree, the opening should really pop out.

Oh yes, Ducky Dan, in the extras, there is one major musical number called KING OF BROADWAY (the first of 7 or 8 deleted schenes). It was a shame this was cut but you might want to check it out. It's the best song in the show, 6 minutes long, and they cut it....I was so mad. Also, the cut song RIO is not in the US release.

I prefer Mel Brooks original movie (sold my DVD version of the new one on half.com). A little too much musical and a little overboard on the happy ending for me.

I just love the score, and the choreography is awesome. I am excited about the fact that this blu-ray has PCM sound! I don't think we will see a release here for some time, considering Universal never released it on hd-dvd here. Looks like I am going to order it. Just hate the thought of the Japanese menus, but just so I can select PCM and hit play I'll be ok :-)

I enjoyed the disc just didn't like the overall price (when I ordered it was likr $51) Having watched a lot of older films since then it looks like they tried to give the picture an older feel so while it didn't pop it didn't look bad. It had a tone similar to a blazing saddles where it looked older than it is which may be how it was filmed since it is supposed to take place in the 50s. That said I have since seen a LOT worse and having rewatched it recently I enjoyed it more that the first viewing. I've also seen the show 5x and while I love the Brooks version and would gladly welcome it this one is still a good watch.
