Angry PS3 Problem - Help needed

My PS3 will not play DVD's on my TV for some reason...

It plays games, Blu Ray's & CD's no problem but whenever I put a DVD in, the screen goes green for a second and then my TV says there is no signal being recieved. I then have to eject the DVD and switch off the PS3.

This is the 2nd PS3 to do this, my first one did exactly the same thing so i took it back and exchanged it for a new one, which does exactly the same thing - leading me to believe that there mey be a compatibility problem between the PS3 and my TV - but only being for DVD's is a bit weird?

The PS3 is hooked up via HDMI to my 37" 1080i LG LP1D LCD TV.

Has anyone else experienced this ?

Does anyone have any advice ?

Any help would be appreciated

Well, the first problem is that if you have an LCD TV, it can NOT be 1080i. Your TV may accept a 1080i input signal, but it's native resolution is going to be ~1366x768... or ~1920x1080 (there is no such thing as a 1080i fixed pixle display).

Have you tried changing your output resolution?... I know that you can get a Blu-ray picture... but have to tried it? Set your output to 480p and see if you get a signal. If you don't see anything, try swapping out cables, or running the composite cable just to see if you can get signal. If you can get it with a different resolution, or you can get it with a different cable, you have narrowed down your problem areas.

Also, have you downloaded 1.8 yet? This may (or may not) be the problem. I don't know if Sony has a 'undo update' code that you could try... but other than that, I don't know what else to tell you.

Not at all complicated. Just put the resolutions your TV support in the settings and it should work. My guess is that you should deactivate 1080i in the settings and leave it on for 720p. Your TV can't show a 1080 resolution anyway, it will get downscaled to about 720p.

This is exactly what I did and it worked. Thanks a lot Merlins.

It's strange though, that when on automatic the PS3 sets my resolution to 1080i and my 360 is set to 1080i and i've never had a problem before.

Oh well, off to rewatch 300 in upscaled beauty

I have two questions concerning the audio outputs for Blu-ray and PS3 games (and I can't seem to be able to post a new thread for some reason):

1. When I set the audio on a disc like Casino Royale or Departed to 5.1 LPCM, my PS3 says that that's what it's outputting at (Linear PCM, 5.1 Ch., 48kHz, 4.6 Mbps.), despite my only using an optical cable (I don't have a HDMI receiver). I know the max for optical is 1.5 Mbps, so does the output get dumbed down to 2.0 LPCM @ 1.5 Mbps or 5.1 LPCM @ 1.5 Mbps?

2. PS3 game like Resistance and Oblivion have DD audio (again, over optical). Is there a way to find out what bitrate they're outputting at? Does anybody know that info anyway?

Thanks for helpin out!

You can only get 2.0 in LPCM mode through the optical cable. You need an HDMI to get the LPCM in it's full 5.1 glory. Sorry. This is why it may be best to stick with bitrate. On the other hand, a good reciever will pick apart the downmixed track and decode the 2.0 track to a good and descent 5.1 sound.

As for question two...good question. I will leave that one for someone who knows.

The problem seem to be in the Television because I don't know of any setting on the PS3 that would do that...
When I connected mine I consulted with an expert in a tech support site, they have free live chat that you can use. This is the page for PS3 Support:

Good luck
