Default Is the PS3 capable of TrueHD sound?

Well, is it? I am thinking of 300 on HD-DVD but would prefer to get it on Blu-ray but It would have to be TrueHD audio and I am not sure if my PS3 will do that?

Thanks
Jeff

Yes, the PS3 supports TrueHD. Look on the retail PS3 box, there's a TrueHD logo.

Doesn't it re-encode it out into PCM and not TrueHD natively??

The PS3 does not pass advanced codecs over HDMI except for Dolby THD after decoding to PCM. I don't know if this feature will be added in the future. I fully understand why members are concerned about this, but as far as I am concerned, decoding in the player to LPCM gives us the most flexibility while maintaining sound quality.

I think that's correct.

But if the PS3 didn't support TrueHD at all, wouldn't that mean that if a movie ONLY had TrueHD, then the PS3 won't be able to play it?

Then the TrueHD signal is decoded on any player it is either transmitted as analog audio through the analog outputs or LPCM audio through HDMI. They probably decode TrueHD to LPCM before it is sent out analog as well. It doesnt degrade the signal at all as they're both lossless.

My PS3 certainly decodes TrueHD so that's all that matters. Apparently the morons at EndgadgetHD haven't figured that out yet.

The NIN disc is perhaps the best thing I've ever heard and it's TrueHD.

Also check out the Legends of Jazz Blu ray. TrueHD. It works, in fact used it tonight with some other Blu Ray's to test 1.8 update for Better Black/White settings.
