Default Got a PS3 for my birthday, and...

... the video quality is just... terrible! First off, this is NOT a knock on Blu-Ray. It's my attempt to figure out wtf is wrong with my picture. I have a 360 with a HD-DVD player hooked up to it and the picture quality I get off that is un-freakin' amazing.

So, here's what I got with the PS3 set-up: It came with the worst possible connections, so I went out and bought the PS3 component cables, so I have the system hooked up prime-time, now. I hooked the PS3 to the Internet so I could auto-download the latest updates, and I remember a bunch of people saying the PS3 had some issues that the updates fixed.

So, the firmware was updated, I got the component cables... but the picture quality looks really bad. I only have "The Pursuit of Happiness" but I would think it would look good. ALSO, while all my HD-DVD's have black bars at the top and the bottom, NONE took up a 3rd of the screen like this Blu Ray... The picture was scrunched up like I haven't seen since Laserdisc.

So...

Help?

Of all things, it's a Sony heh

It's a Sony KE-32TS2U Plasma TV, 32 inch I believe? It shows of the HD-DVD titles off my X Box 360 perfectly, hopefully I can figure out why its not with the PS3.

If it's a 720p/1080i tv, make sure you have it at 1080i. When I first got mine it looked like a SD picture b/c I had 720p. Switched it to 1080i and it looks a lot better. Also, what movies or games are you viewing?

It looks like the TV doesn't do 1080p, and since Blu-ray movies don't play in 720p for some reason, only 1080i works. So, your movies are playing in 480p right now, most likely.

You need to change the settings on the PS3 to only display 1080i.

You can do that under 'Settings' > 'Display Settings' and uncheck all except 1080i.

Thanks, guys! Yeah, with the HD-DVD on the 360 I didn't have to change any settings, everything was automatic... I had to go through the PS3's settings to chose what my TV plays at... and you were right, it plays at everything - but I had to set it up to do so. The movie looked 100x better!

Yeah, that's it. at 480p your TV was stretching it and that's why the image was only covering so much of the screen.

I'm having a similar problem, and my TV does do 720p/1080i. My Xbox 360 HD DVD player looks absolutely stunning with the movies I've watched, but the Blu-ray titles look only marginally better than DVD. My PS3 is hooked up via HDMI, and I'm pretty sure everything is set right.

Games look great, but the Blu-ray movies have not impressed me at all thus far. I'm hoping it's just the titles I watched, I'll be getting Crank tomorrow and I know that's supposed to look amazing. So far I've seen Silent Hill, Memento, Layer Cake, xXx, The Holiday, and Casino Royale. Out of all of those Casino Royale was the only one that had that HD pop to it. The others had a soft/fuzzy look, barely better than a standard DVD.

Overall thus far I'd have to say HD DVD's picture quality has impressed me much more. Also, I'd really wish they'd stop making movies in what I call "widescreen-widescreen." I believe it's really like 2.35.1 something or other aspect ratio. Movies look so much better when they take up the full screen of my HDTV's, like Crank. Nothing major ever happens on the extreme sides in movies anyway, so I don't care if it preserves the director vision or whatever. Besides I always though once I bought widescreen HDTV's that I would be getting the black bars anymore... it's annoying.
