Default BDP-S1 playback problem at 24fps with bd50 mpeg-4 encoding

I watch all my BD at 24fps trough my Panasonic AE900 (which accept 1080/24fps). I realized that I have playback problem only with movies on BD50 encoded with mpeg-4.

The playback problems can be experience :

1) When you skip a chapter, the movie start to be jumpy for 2 or 3 seconds, then itís getting back in place by itself

2) On specific sequence , the movie start to be jumpy for 1 or 2 seconds, then itís getting back in place by itself

I experience these problem on the following movies.
- The Holiday
- King Arthur Directorís cut
- Casino Royal

All these movies are BD50 encoded MPEG-4.

Anyone have experience these problems ?

The goal of this tread is to cumulate any movies titles with this particular type of problem. So you may decide to buy them or not. The problem may be related to the BDP-S1 itself . If so, Sony must issue a firmware to fix this problem. I have paid this machine 1,300 CAD. At this price tag you want the unit to work at 100%.

Why watching a movie at (1080/24fps) ? The image stream is as close as it can be in a movie theater. PQ is better, and no generated frames.

Just out of curiousity, have you tried playing them back at 60hz and do the same things to see if the problems continue?

Yes i tried it. And those particular problems goes away. But by doing so, the picture quality is deteriorating very much on many aspect. My projector is 720p. So I can change the resolution to 1080/60i or 720/60p. This last setting is not to good. The BDP-S1 do not downconvert in a very good way.

This machine is supposed to work at 1080/24p. Sony is selling this feature with the BDP-S1

To make a figure of speech . If your car is working on 2 out of 4 cylinders. It will continue to work. You will be able to go anywhere, but not at the pace you want. Are you gonna be satisfied ?

My question is. Is anyone using this player with a projector or TV which is 1080/24p compatible ? If yes did you experience those problems ?

Default It is the player

I have posted about this several times with little or no response, I've even contacted hidefdiget directly with no response whatsoever.

The worst movie so far is Open Season, but the same thing can be seen on Casino Royale and others - so far they have all been SONY releases.

I have talked to Sony about this and their Blu-ray engineer's are aware of the problem and admit that it is specific to the player. However, there is no solution in sight and having paid $1000US for my player, I find this unacceptable.

Honestly, I can't believe that I have had so little response and interest in such a major problem...I hope you have more luck with your post than I have had with mine!

Default BDP-S1 judder issue at 24fps

I found this forum which you can find a lot of people experiencing the judder issue with the bdp-s1 at 24fps, even with the Pearl PJ.

Check it out !!!

Go on the avsforum. I cannot post the url because this site prevent me to do so. The thread name is "Sony BDP-S1 BD Player: USER REPORTS Here "

People getting to the same conclusion then myself. The problem occurs only on mpeg4 encoding (AVC). They say that Sony is aware of the problem and they are working on firware to fix this issue (is it true or not...)

Happy the see that i am not crazy !

Thanks for the info! Glad to see there are more of us out there. The latest post lists a Sony link discussing firmware 1.6 available Mid-April. Maybe they mean next Mid-April since it is already Late-April

I had a similiar problem with skipping frames, however I switched back to 1080p output and problem stops-in fact I think the picture looks just as good as 1080/24p

I finally got an answer from Sony-Casino Royale, Holiday, & one other title? do not play correctly thru 1080/24p! They suggested I call Sony Pictures(800-860-2878). I did, and they claim this is the first they heard of the problem and will investigate, so other people need to CALL Sony Pictures.

I followed your suggestion. I called Sony Pictures yesterday to let them know. So now they have at least two complaints.. :-)
