Question A couple of newb questions

1. How do I tell the refresh rate on my tv?

2. On a 32'' tv is there really a big difference between 1080i and 1080p?

3. Are blu-ray disc region encoded?

I appriciate any help you can give. thanks

1. The manual should give you this one. Unless it says 1080P/24 capable don't expect it to do anything other than 720P, 1080i, or 1080P/60 depending on the set.

2. Depends on whether the set uses motion adaptive deinterlacing (this is the one you want it to do) or the cheaper Bob method which only actually gives you 540P instead of 1080i.

3. Depends on the disc. Day and dates are almost always region coded but many catalog titles are region free.

Hope this helps.

Default thanks

thanks for the help, I should have done more research I guess. I can't see a whole lot of difference between my blu-rays and upconverted dvds. I have a feeling that I'm not getting the full 1080i.

More than likely, your TV is 60hz. If you're that question about 32" TVs, then it's probably 60hz. There are only two TVs at that size that I know of that do 120hz (Sony XBR and Panny 700).

At 32" you will absolutely not see a difference between 720p, 1080i and 1080p. I've got a 1080p 32" TV and my A2 and Panny DMB30 give out exactly the same kind of picture quality on my TV. I don't see any loss of detail and I don't see any interlacing. You won't really notice much of a difference between these until you at least go to 40", and even then, you have to be sitting pretty close to your TV to differentiate between 720p and 1080p.

Sounds like your TV is bobbing the signal so 540P versus 480P is not much of a difference. I would set your player and other source material to 720P and see if you notice a difference. It won't be a dramatic jump but it should look more detailed than upscaled DVD's.

I had this problem with the older Sony S-series that did the same thing. I have an XBR4 1080P now and the difference is night and day.

Wink No visual difference

My brother has a Polaroid 32" - sweet looking, by the way; Samsung makes their panels - and it looks WAYYYY better in 720p than 1080i. I guess the 540p thing probably explains that.

But yeah, on a 32" that truly supports 1080p, there's NO way the human eyes can see the difference between 1080p & 720p. (Does anyone even make less than 40" panels with true 1080p anyway? That would be retarded.)

However, I really CAN see a difference between 720p and 1080p on a 40" panel. Even from 10 feet away. So can my wife. Take that as you will.
