Exclamation $200 Blu-ray players this year expected says Sigma Designs VP of Strategic Marketing

http://money.cnn.com/news/newsfeeds/...4_FORTUNE5.htm

Long article about semi-conductor and SoC manufacturers who were winners and losers in the format war had this little gem:
Quote:
Sigma Designs' success was partly accidental. The company tried to win Toshiba's HD DVD business, said Ken Lowe, vice president of strategic marketing, but Toshiba went with Broadcom and, later, NEC.

"We went out there trying to capture as much high-definition player business as possible," he said. "Mainly it was Blu-ray business that was available."

Now, the company is the incumbent in a business that is about to blast ahead. Consumers bought 2.9 million blue laser DVD players last year but are expected to snap up 7.6 million this year and 13.6 million in 2009, Gartner estimates....
Quote:
...An increase in the number of chip building for Blu-ray seems destined to speed up chip commoditization and price declines. And consumers will be the winners.

Sigma Design's Lowe said it's widely expected that new Blu-ray players from China and Taiwan will be in stores at prices near $200 in time for Christmas.

I will believe it when I see it. There always seems to be talk of those elusive $200 Blu-ray but it never seems to happen. You won't see BR prices move until the PS3 prices do.

Default not too unrealistic

Sony supposedly has developed a new laser chip that will reduce costs,so I do not see that a no frills player is not possible. But the number of sales predicted seems unrealistic. Unless he means worldwide numbers, that would however give bd only 5-10% of the video sales market, still very low.

My question is will they be the 2.0 standard though or just a low end system with poor specs? I really wish they would make a better effort to get a consistancy between players. Right now the only player that interest me is the Panasonic BD-50 until other players come out with the same specs with a $200 to $300 price range I'll stick with my PS3.

Default later on year

anything released later on this year willl most likely be 2.0 profile., but no guarantee, Keep using the ps3 and wait, that is best move at this point for you.
