Default Thinking on getting a BD player but need help please...

I am finally thinking on jumping to the dark side (more like blue but you get it) and need some help. In the good old days, for HD-DVDs there wasnt a hugh PQ difference between the Toshiba players. It seems BD players do have BIG PQ differences so I need to get the best bag for buck I can get that has 5.1 analog output.
I want the cheapest but without ending up with "terrible" PQ of course.
Thanks for the help blue guys...

But isnt the PS3 as a bluray player pretty bad when it comes to PQ? What about the 5.1 analog output?
I wouldnt mind having a gaming system at the same time but havent read good things about it so want to make sure.

I can get a good deal on this:
Samsung BD-UP5000
It will actually help me get the analog output HD-DVD player I wanted and the BD at the same time.

would definitely AVOID the 5000 at all costs because of its severe audio limitations--no firmware has been issued to allow trueHD or DTS-MA bitstream ability.
there are 2 choices currently for Blu-Ray that make any sense--
1) PS3 or
2) Panasonic bd-30

there will be MANY more choices after May 1st.
this is the current situation regarding Blu-Ray players imo.

You know researching all this things, it really makes me wonder why the hell Bluray won the war!
In any case I guess the bd30 will be my choice since the PS3 doesnt have analog output AFAIK.

That is why you will find a number of HD DVD'ers hold off probably until fall. The BD-Live players will be out then. Unless a PS3 is what you want, it is advised to wait, IMO.

I was in the same boat as you, and recently purchased a Samsung BD P-1400. Based on my research the P-1400 has great picture and audio but it does have its quirks, also Samsung is slow with their firmware updates.

In my opinion the best BD player now is the PS3, its reliable and upgradeable. If you would rather have a stand alone unit I would really recommend you wait a few months for a finalized product. I like blu-ray but I think most of us can agree its definitely a work in progress.

Wait a month or two for the BD-Live/Profile 2.0 Panasonic BD50. It does stuff the PS3 can't, including bitstreaming of nextgen codecs and full decoding of DTS-HDMA. In addition the BD50 is very fast, has analog 5.1 outputs in addition to HDMI unlike the PS3, and is much smaller and quieter than the PS3. Finally, the BD50 has an IR remote so it will work with your Universal Remote unlike the PS3, plus the BD50 looks a heck of a lot nicer than the PS3.

Overall, the BD50 looks like it will be the player to beat this year. It is a better choice than the BD30 because the BD50 can decode all of the nextgen codecs and the BD30 can't, so the analog 5.1 on the BD50 is a lot more useful on the BD50 than the 5.1 on the BD30.
