Default What is the best audio i can get from my setup?

I'm wondering what is the best audio i can get from my setup.

I have a PS3 and a Sony ES5200 receiver. Can i get PCM with this setup? Dolby true HD? That DTS-MA or whatever it is?

I have HDMI going from the ps3 to the receiver. Should i do optical for best sound?

Thanks for any advice.

Use the HDMI for audio, optical will reduce the bandwidth available and you'll end up with DVD-quality audio.

The Sony can decode TrueHD but not DTS-MA. You will therefore want to decode on the PS3 and send PCM via HDMI.

ok, so i set my ps3 to pcm.

When i put in a blu-ray movie, do i choose true-hd or uncompressed audio in the options of the blu-ray disc?

well, try both, and then see what the sample rate is on the receiver. TrueHD is really just a way to have PCM take up less space. Ideally, this allows a disc maker to put higher resolution audio on.

When it decodes to PCM, it might, for example, be 48KHz 24 bit via TrueHD, but 48KHz 16-bit for PCM.

I don't think there's any hard and fast rule, except to say that if someone bothered to put TrueHD or DTS-MA on a disc as well as PCM, that there's a least a chance it will be better quality...

thanks man, you helped alot.

One last thing. If a disc only has dts-ma, that means i can't get true hd sound because the ps3 nor my reciever decode that right? Like i think i read warner is going with dts-ma primarily now. What would i choose in that case? Would the next best audio be like dolby 5.1 or something dvd quality?

Choose the DTS-MA. You won't get the DTS-MA, but you will get a 1.5 mbps DTS core.
