Default Players and DVD's

I know that the blu-ray players can upconvert regular dvd's. I have always wondered how much they are upgraded. I know it isn't 1080 and probably not 720 but does anyone know the resolution dvd's run at while playing in a blu-ray player? If the resolution differs from player to player I own a samsung 1400. I was watching the Lord of the Rings earlier in the day and I noticed it was much better than my old dvd player but still nowhere near my blu-ray movies. Just thought I'd ask in case someone knew. I've been wondering it for a while now.
