Default Samsung 1400 Audio question

If I have both the 5.1 channel analogue cables and the optical cable hooked up to the dvd player with the bitstream option setting checked, does the player default to the optical audio outlet? I have an older yamaha 5150 reciever which I set to external decoder hoping that I will recieve the lossless audio signal thru the analogue cables. Is this correct or am I recieving the compressed optical signal? Thanks for the help.

For Yoda, I believe the problem is that optical can only handle PCM 2.0. The full bandwith of PCM 5.1 can only be through HDMI or though analogue cables.

For Texzen, I would imagine that, if the setting is set to bitstream, it would send the info through the optical cable. Analogues are useful if your player decodes the info itself. So, try setting the audio to PCM or something like that, and take out the optical cable. There might also be a analogue out option in the audio menu. I don't have the Sammy player. Just make sure to tell it to output PCM through the analogue outs.

toslink cables don't have enough bandwidth for 5.1 lossless. They can only transfer at 3.1mb/s data rate. That is usually enough for 2.0 pcm. You need HDMI for 5.1 PCM and next gen audio formats including DD+.

Actually I don't use a receiver to connect my Blu Ray player to my audio system.

My subwoofer connects all the speakers to the Blu Ray player with optical cable only.

Would it be ok if :
1) I buy a receiver
2) Connect the receiver to my Bluray player with HDMI
3) Connect my sound system to my receiver with an optical cable (my only option)
