Default Someone confirm: Onkyo 605 7.1 PCM?

Before I purchase this and I can't find anything confirming this, can the Onkyo 605 7.1 do Multichannel PCM up to 7.1? I know it can do DTS-HD MA and TrueHD up to 7.1.

The reason I ask is my current budget receiver does 5.1 DD and DTS, but only 2 channel PCM. I don't want to buy this knowing it can handle 7.1 DTS-HD MA and TrueHD and find out it can only handle say 5.1 PCM. It's little things like this that screw me over when buying electronics, as my only current Blu-ray player is the PS3 and since it can't bitstream I want the decoded or raw PCMs to be sent fully the way they are.

You could try phoneing onkyo.... But i am 99% sure if you feed it a 7.1 PCM stream it will handle it as a 7.1 PCM stream.

From what I can gather with our ole friend Google, it does not do PCM 7.1.

edit: Scratch that. I'm looking at the owner's manual from Onkyo's web site, and it specifically lists "Multichannel linear PCM (7.1 ch, 32-192 kHz)."

So looks like it does.

No im pretty sure if your PS3 decodes 3:10 to Yuma's 7.1 track (which it can't because it's DTS-Hd MA) but let's assume it can the onkyo would be able to play it fully. The thing the 605 CAN'T do is MATRIX 7.1. Which means it can't take a 5.1 source and guess at adding in the surround back speakers...they will be silent on 5.1 sources.

Edit: Why are you concerned about this?? There are NO 7.1 TrueHD or PCM tracks on BD's.

3:10 to Yuma is 7.1 PCM, not DTS-MA (Crank is 6.1 PCM, almost 7). The PS3 will send that PCM to the receiver to play normally, my question was if the receiver can accept 7.1 PCM and not downgrade it to 5.1 PCM or whatever. I know it can't matrix 5.1 to 6.1 or 7.1... which in the end I'm accepting for respect of the original intentions and not faked rears.

Update: I believe Rescue answered my question.

it will do 7.1 PCM

What it WILL NOT DO is matrix your 5.1 PCM signal into a 7.1 signal. So if you select a 5.1 PCM track you will only hear 5.1 with the 2 rears left un-active. The 805 and 9xx (can't remember the exact model #) are the only ones with this capability.

IMHO if you really want 7.1 all the time & w/very few releases containing 7.1 at the moment I'd save up more $$$ for the 805. I know it's double the price of the 605 but...you gotta ask yourself if having 2 more speakers is worth another $400 just to use them.

This is a Home Theater discussion. I understand how it relates to your BD hardware but still it's HT territory.

*Edit* I just read your post above...Sorry

I have this receiver and can confirm the earlier posts here are correct in that it will handle a 7.1 pcm stream if you can find something to supply it. I don't have a copy of yuma to test it; but I have tried using other sources and it does work. The posts are also correct about matrixing as the 605 will not do that.

Own the Onkyo 605 and 3:10 Yuma. Will it play linear pcm at 7.1 channels? Yes. Will It decode all advanced audio codecs such as dts ma and true-hd? Yes. Will it matrix 5.1 into 7.1? Yes and No, it doesnt have the might to take dts-ma, true-hd or pcm and put it into 7.1, but it will with dolby digital and dts. Onkyo 705, 805 and 905 do all of the above, plus more. In fact the 605 can be found easily less than 500 from a lot of retailers and I have no regret buying it.

Thanks so much. I'm getting it from Amazon for $397, which IMO is an amazing deal. I don't have to have matrixed sound to the rears.

You will not be disappointed. I have it and I LOVE it. Also it'll make you future proof if you decide to get a player that can bitstream TrueHD/DTS-HD MA.
