Default $299! 2nd possible price drop on Blu-ray players by end of 2007.

I just saw this link from Cnet.com stating that sony is possibly droping the price of their already price cut $600 Blu ray player to an even lower price of $299 by the end of 2007!!!

This can't be real.... can it???? How would they drop from 1000 to 700 to 300 just like that? Unless they don't care about profits right now and are looking at long term investment by effectively losing money right now to kill the competition.

well we have to keep in mind, it is not the same player. the S1 ($1000) the S300 ($600) and who knows what model will be at that price point but I can assure you, it wont hold the same features as its higher brother units. But I also believe that sony is looking long term. Less profit now, assure Blu-ray victory in the future.

I always think it would be possible ( especially if Sony ).

I stated this before. If Sony and IBM get the production cost of the Cell processor down and especially a lower power version. Sony because more demand better production could get the Blu-ray drive itself down. Not including Bluetooth controllers, hard disk and other game support of PS3.

Sony could easly make a standalone player using PS3 style components that that could use the Cell procesor to drive Blu-ray movies only. Include Internet access for updating the firm ware. Cheaper GPU could be in case of Blu-ray only. The case would liok liek a stand alone and actually lot smaller than existing Blu-ray and HD DVD player currently ( except of course the 360 drive which is really just an add on drive ).

I'd really be astonished if Sony managed to pull this off and if they did it would just show to me they're scared to death of HD DVD.

That's ridiculous. It would be because Sony and other Blu-Ray companies want to sell more volume to consumers of Blu-Ray.

Consumers are very price sensitive and it's a barrier to many consumers. Not to goto war with HD DVD over first adopters. BR already won that war.

If Sony managed to get a player out for $299 then there would really be no reason for J6P to even consider buying a cheap Chinese HD DVD player with anemic industry support when they could get a high quality Sony BD player.

So does that mean that HD-DVD is just scared shitless of Blu-ray, thus the lower price point?

Gee I think It sounds alot more the opposite, Sony sounds scared shitless of the announcement of cheaper HD DVD players being produced to come out later this year. Maybe they got a tip about how low the prices were going to street on them?

When HD DVD annouced cheaper players BD people knocked it, Now since Sony is doing it It's ok?

I find it a little bit odd, from now $1,000 then $599 by summer then $299 by the holidays.

So let me get this straight. When HD-DVd announced a lower price point, its because they love consumers. When Sony announced Lower Price points, its because their scared. When HD-DVD drops their prices, its because their doing good, when Sony drops it, its because their loosing.

So if Sony has the higher price, you bitch
When Sony has the lower price, you bitch

It cant possibly be do the fact that their selling so much more then HD-DVD and as business 101 says, higher the quantity, the lower the price point right?
