Default Sony developing cheaper Blu-ray laser

If they can quickly produce a under-$200 Blu-Ray player with Profile 1.1 or 2.0then I will definitely jump onto Blu-Ray. It looks like there a newer version of PS3 will be cheaper to build with 65nm shrink.

I remember what happened when the slim PS2 was announced. Smaller, cheaper to make, more efficient. The price never changed. I do not think this will change the price of the PS3. It will only stop hurting the pockets of sony alittle more.

What it does help though is entice companies to make players. If it becomes cheaper, and much more efficient, then companies like Oppo wouldnt hesitate making dual players. The hd-dvd part is dirt cheap save the licencing. Eventually blu will get there and the two will be indistinguishable.

I can guarantee you that the ps3 will not go under $200 dollars in the next few years. Under $300....now that could be a possiblity (like a black friday deal).

If you are looking for a general blu-ray player under $200, that also is not going to be likely (at least a quality player).

In the next 2 years though I think the general range will fall to 250-350 range. Prices are starting to drop, but blu1.1, 2.0 are enabling companies to charge high prices on only very limited upgrades. I mean pay an extra hundred to just get 2.0 certified!

People are so concerned about blu beating Hd-DVD, that they dont realize that blu is not priced now to compete at all with DVD.

Recently Best Buy had a 20% off promotion for HD players which resulted in Sony BD-300 to be at $320 instead of $399. If I wait till November, I would hope it would be down to $300 and maybe even lower for Black Friday.
