Default BD-J Firmware update for PiP??

I've heard that Warner among other studios are holding off on releasing some titles on either format until after June 1, 2007 because Blu-ray players can't have PiP or other interactive features until then.

My question is, will they be able to have an update for current players or will this feature only be available to new players after that?

If it leaves out the PS3 and other current players than it pretty much is useless to wait for those extra features which most customers won't even be able to use.

I assume that this is an disc authoring issue and therefore it should not matter which hardware is used to play it.

True PiP (not a second copy of the film like Lionsgate uses) needs a second video processor in addition to the proper software to work. I don't know if the PS3 has a second video processor built in or not, but I'm pretty sure the other BD players do not.

I thought that could be the case. I heard that for now PiP had to be done with a 2nd copy of the movie that has the picture in the corner. Not a very optimal way to do it.

If the PS3 won't be able to do that, then they are really shooting themselves in the foot.

I don't see why the PS3 couldn't handle it. Especially since according to that interview that was done with SCE developers about a month or 2 ago about the 1080p/24. According to that they were running 2 H.264 streams @ 40Mbps on dev kit that has a slower clockspeed compared to the final version that is out now.

I believe that article was posted here in the forums.

I think it's too early to tell exactly what players will be compatible and even if compatability will be an issue. It's just another reason to sit on the sidelines...
