Default BDP-S300 Firmware Update?

My friend just called me and he said that his new BDP-S300 is not playing Pirates that it needs a firmware upgrade. I'm trying to help him find it and I'm not having any luck.

If it does need one could someone point me to it? Is it like HD-DVD where you have to have a CD-RW to update it?

Everybody seems to be having long load times with the two Pirates movies (with the s300). The load time is apparently about 3-4 times longer than any other disc. It's because of the advanced BD-Java the disc uses.

I've only had my BDP-S300 for a little over a month now and besides the serveral minutes to load in the beginning I had no trouble playing Pirates. Mine is using firmware v2.10.

I found this on another site how to check the version. Even though it says BDP-S1 it also works for the S300:

Quote:
Check Current Firmware Version
Power on the television and make sure it is tuned to the inputs to which the BDP-S1 player is connected.
Power on the BDP-S1 Blu-ray DiscŪ player.
If the player starts to play a disc, press the "STOP" button and wait until the blue Sony Blu-ray Disc screen is displayed on the television before proceeding.
On the remote control (RMT-B100A), press the SYSTEM MENU button.
At the "System Menu" screen, use the arrow keys on the remote control to highlight "Setup" and then press the ENTER button.
At the "Setup" screen, use the arrow keys on the remote control to highlight "Video Setup" and then press the ENTER button.
Use the arrow keys on the remote control to highlight "TV Type" and then press the ENTER button.
On the remote control, press "BLUE" button.
The firmware version currently installed on the BDP-S1 will be listed on the television screen.

This utility updates the BDP-S300 firmware to version 2.60, and Improves BD-Java compatibility to enhance interactivity with some BD-ROMs

My firmware is 2.20... and it says on the site that the firmware is for units sold in USA/Canada only.

I wonder if there will be a version for Asia Pacific players soon?

FYI, the instructions on Sony's site claim that you must burn the ISO to a DVD, but I burned it to a CD and my player updated perfectly fine.

For those of us with the BDP-301 instead of the BDP-300, there is another Sony web page for the former, although it may just be a rebrand of the same file because the two players are apparently identical in all but model number. The BDP-301 version 2.60 firmware download is located here: (just add http to the beginning of the link since I cannot yet post url links because this is my first post.)
