It has always done BD movies at 1080i and 720p over component.

It is DVDs that can't operate at any resolution above 480p via a component video connection - this is true for all DVD players and is the law for them.

I can't say how, exactly, it works for games, but I know that I run my PS3 at 1080i and 720p via component and this works fine for the games I own.

In fact, if your TV accepts 1080i and 720p resolutions, you never have had an issue with anything via component video connections. I got mine on opening day, and haven't had a single connectivity issue via component using 1080i and 720p for gaming or movie watching.

PS3 has always supported 1080i over component. As mentioned by HD-DED, DVD upscaling (which was added with a firmware update in May 2007) can only be output over HDMI. I don't know how Xbox 360 skirts around the DVD Forum rules, but apparently 360 can upscale over VGA. However, NO OTHER DVD player in existence is known to upscale above 480p via component, as it breaks the HDMI stipulation in the DVD Forum licensing.

When PS3 launched, there were those with older HDTV's that did not support native 720p input. For those games that were in 720p, I believe there were reports that on those sets they'd either get downscaled to 480p, or the users had to put PS3 in that mode in order to get output.

I believe that was all solved (if not sooner) by the May firmware.

PS3 has had a steady stream of firmware improvements (they just released 1 yesterday) and is on v1.92 now. Some things that PS3 supports now that it did not in Dec 2006:
--Upscaling (PS2 games & DVD's --via HDMI)
--HDMI deeper-than-black output
--Customizable wallpaper (I believe 1.92 adds Flash wallpaper support, too)
--Web browser updates, including zoom
--Background downloads
--Remote Play (use PSP on a remote WiFi network to access content on your PS3 at home)
[email protected] research network-computing
--Printers
--Nearly 'full' generic bluetooth accessory support (keyboards, headsets)
--(Other cool stuff I'm probably forgetting)
