Default 1080i or 720p?

I am planning to put my PS3 in my room and get a stand alone blu ray. Anyways the TV in my room is 720p/1080i resolution. I was wondering to set my PS3 to 720p or 1080i for viewing movies. Which setting would make it better for playing blu ray movies 720 progressive or 1080 interlaced. I don't know much about this and any advice that anyone could give me that would be great. I rarely use my PS3 for gaming because there is hardly any out right now. Just wondering what setting or resolution I should use for a better picture for movie blu ray watching only on this tv. Thanks to all in advance.

720p. Chances are better than not that your TV will convert everything to 720p anyway, so you might as well just have the player output it in the first place.

or you can let the PS3 automatically set optimal resolution.

your TV is likely 768p if it doesnt do 1080p so it would accept a 1080i signal(because some HD broadcasts are 1080i only) but then it downconverts the 1080i to 768 and deinterlaces so 768 isnt much better than 720 and the progressive scan is better than deinterlaced so go 720p

Thanks to those that replied. Could you really see that much of a difference between the two. So 720p is the best for viewing blu ray and regular dvds on my tv.

if your set is NOT a crt, it CANNOT physically do 1080i, so it's a non-issue. You will be getting 720p regardless.
