Assuming this isn't a joke, the simple answer is that Blu-rays have a lot more storage capacity than DVDs. Therefore video and audio can be loaded on uncompressed unlike DVDs where the video and audio have to be compressed to fit. Which is why Blu-ray = better picture and sound.

That's the basic summary of the differences.

The HD video quality is still lossy compressed video on Blu-ray, however Blu-rayís high bit rate makes it the best quality video and audio for the consumer market. Blu-ray also offers lossless 7.1 audio quality that is bit for bit the same as the 7.1 PCM studio master.

Blu-ray players also play standard DVDís and audio CDís.
