Default Samsung BD-P1200 Audio Questions

I've heard that this unit will not bitstream Dolby TruHD via hdmi. But will it send out uncompressed PCM over hdmi? Isn't TruHD just Dolby's compressed version of PCM? What about DTS-HDMA? I just want to make sure that when I finally get my HDMI receiver, that I'm not looking at another expense.

The BD-P1200 cannot pass or decode to pcm for both TrueHD, DTS-HD HR and DTS-HD MA. It's rather unfortunate but thats the way it is. You can pass PCM over HDMI and it would decode DD+ and pass that as PCM as well. So if theres a PCM soundtrack then you are fine, but if there is a TrueHD track you will have to get another player. Right now only the PS3, Panny players, and first gen Sony will decode TrueHD to PCM. As of yet, no machine can decode DTS-HD MA.

So even though the decoding would be done on the receiver's end, the player still has to be able to pass the individual streams? That seems really stupid. The Samsung features hdmi 1.3 for cryin' out loud. How seemingly short sighted. Could this situation be corrected with a firmware upgrade?

No, right now there are no hardware chips that support the passing of TrueHD/DTS-HD HR/DTS-HD MA. No firmware update for any machine (even the PS3) will correct this. To say you have HDMI 1.3, all you have to do is support some of the 1.3 features, not all. I think its dumb too. Hopefully the BD-P1400 and BD-P2400 will be able to pass the audio, but right now, no one knows.

Well that just really rots. Now I'm curious if there are any BDs that don't feature PCM as an audio option.

Default Immortal Beloved...

... is listed as having TrueHD audio, but no other options were listed in this site's review.

I'm confused... is it possible to get a Blu-ray disc that won't have any audio at all on the Sammy 1200? How could this happen?

I'll take anything - anything at all that will pass through the discreet analog or optical outs.

Since TrueHD is an "optional" codec legacy Dolby Digital 5.1 must be included since it is required. You will never have a case when you will hear nothing.

So what happens if I play, say X-Men: The Last Stand, and send the DTS-MA to my receiver by way of 5.1 analogue?

You can't send anything through analogue. The player must first decode the stream then send what its decoded out of analogue. In the case of DTS-HD MA it will decode the "core" DTS 1.5mbit stream. This would be no different than if you connected the player through coax or optical to the receiver.

Gotcha. Thanx for the info. Just for clarification - PCM will go out over 5.1 analog, correct?

On a side note, The Sammy arrived yesterday, so I set it up and spun a few minutes of POTC:The Curse of the Black Pearl using 5.1 analog to my receiver. I selected the PCM option and assume that's what I was hearing. It was really sweet, whatever it was.
