Default Samsung BD-D6700 3D Blu-ray player (June 2011 Home Theater Magazine review)

Samsung BD-D6700 3D Blu-ray player (June 2011 Home Theater Magazine review)

The Samsung BD-D6700 has many positive features and a few negatives. The Samsung BD-D6700 according to page 69 of the instruction manual limits the component video output to 480i quality. All brands of Blu-ray players introduced in 2011 limit component video outputs to 480i quality since it is mandatory according to the AACS agreement. The two HDMI output's offers 3-D and 2-D 1080P quality. Like many other models of 2011 Blu-ray players the Samsung BD-D6700 has no 7.1 or 5.1 analog outputs. Lossless HDMI and lossy optical is located on the player for the connection to a surround sound system.

A few negatives:

· No 24fps DVD upconversion feature on the 2011 Samsung Blu-ray players. Panasonic Blu-ray players offer a better DVD upconverion. Both Panasonic and Sony offer the 24fps DVD feature(A 480i film based DVD undergoes a reverse 3:2 pulldown process to offer 1080p/24 output).

· Video scaling is only good and not excellent on the Samsung BD-D6700. OPPO, Denon, and Panasonic Blu-ray players have better quality video scaling.

· No Super Audio CD support or DVD-Audio support. Low cost 2010 and 2011 Sony Blu-ray players offer SACD support.

Positives:

· The Samsung BD-D6700 Blu-ray player passed all the difficult video tests and offers an excellent 1080P/24 output when playing Blu-ray discs.

· 1GB of built in flash memory is included in the Samsung BD-D6700 Blu-ray player for BD-LIVE. A USB port is available for external storage.

· 2 HDMI outputs and built in WiFi.

The following is a quote from the June 2011 Home Theater magazine review link

“While streaming services are great and give you an enormous library of new material, nothing comes close to the experience of Blu-ray. Even the best streaming services fall short of Blu-ray’s pristine HD picture and surround sound. The BD-D6700 excelled here, with reference-quality playback of both 2D and 3D content and a snappy interface that never got in the way of the experience.”

What's not available in Canada? The player can be bought from many online sources.
