ps3 + sony sdr-dg1000 7.1 receiver - whats the best audio output I can get

as above I have a ps3 with most rescent update going to asony str-dg1000 receiver thru a hdmi cable, believe its a 1.3, now I know I can't get dts-ma audio from the ps3, so can the receiver break the signal down to dts-ma? what is the max that this combo will produce? Does this receiver take the audio signal and break it down any more that the ps3 does. I have sound to all 7 speakers but does that make it 7.1? Any help appriciated. BTW I have the audio on the ps3 set to bitstream, I think thats better than the pcm setting.

if your receiver is lpcm compatible then set it to lpcm. bitstream youll only get dd and dts. with a hdmi cable set to lpcm, you can get true hd with the ps3 decoding it. when dts ma decoding becomes available for the ps3, then you would be able to decode it with the ps3 and output that as well as lpcm. as of now with dts ma, youll only get the core 5.1. i have an onkyo 705 and i have it set to lpcm. i keep it there and let the ps3 do the decoding. some people prefer the receiver do the decoding and say it does a better job. but its up to you.
