Default HD DVD was a no brainer

To me HD DVD was a no brainer. I held out for a long time on which format to choose, but back in the middle of July I finally decided to pick up a HD DVD player for my Xbox 360. I bought it used (but in perfect condition) off of eBay.

I put in Miami Vice and I was stunned. I mean it is just unreal. Then Batman Begins...wow...enough said.

I am on a 1080p display and its just unreal. I am using the VGA video in order to get the 1080p out of the 360 - I have a regular Premium, before they started putting HDMI in them.

I ultimately took the plunge and chose HD DVD because of the pricing, Sony's track record (never won any format or had one that survived...cough UMD?), Sony in general, and the fact that the HD DVD addon drive for the 360 just couldn't be beat in terms of price and convenience.

I got it before they started all these crazy giveaways for including the HD DVD add on drive so I didn't get to take advantage of those free movie giveaways (I missed it by about 2-3 weeks).

Overall I am COMPLETELY satisfied with HD DVD and although I originally had intended to eventually get a Blu-ray player as well, I just have no interest anymore in Blu-ray. HD DVD or nothing at all.

I am also quickly building my collection...I have 13 total so far, I just bought 5 today

Great site, longtime reader, new forum member.

Do you not consider CD to be a surviving format? Honestly though, did anyone expect UMD to become anything other than a format used for the PSP???

Both formats can deliver superior audio and video. Your add-on will limit you in the HD Audio dept but like you said, can't beat that price!

Don't let your feelings toward Sony hold you back from enjoying Blu's potential and High Def content. Sony isn't the only company investing in the BD pool.

I hear you, there are some quality Blu-ray titles that I would LOVE to purchase, such as Casino Royale and Black Hawk Down, but at this point I don't have the money to dump to invest in two formats (college student).

I think Blu-ray is a solid product but I just think its a little ridiculous to buy into both formats. I'm more than happy with HD DVD, and I can live without some of my fave titles on HD DVD.

I do intend to buy a dedicated HD DVD player soon (they're so cheap now, why the hell not) so I can also put that in the family room where we have a 51" HDTV. Currently I am running on a 1080p display in my room that looks fantastic but the screen size is nearly half what the 51" is.

I joined HD DVD because of PRICE and nothing else. I consider the formats to be virtually equal. I see and hear no difference from what I've looked at in stores. HD DVD and Blu-ray are both great products, but HD DVD is affordable right now and they actually GAVE me the player and then some with the 10 free discs I got. 300 and Bourne Identity in the box, plus I chose Batman Begins, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and the Departed from the shelf. Plus the 5 free mail-in offer. It's around $260-270 in disc prices if we use Best Buy's typical prices. I paid $216 including tax for my A3 player so it's truly a hell of a deal!

Now, I do wish I could watch Casino Royale or the Pirates movies but oh well, I'll just keep waiting for Blu-ray to become affordable outside of the PS3 or for HD DVD to win.
