I've posted here a few times, and didn't notice this thread. After befriending someone who had a 48 inch Samsung HDTV & a PS3 for a Blu Ray player, I started out my journey on getting one. I had made a wise choice and sold off my normal DVD's the year before when finding out about the HD Switch. I figured I could wait a year or two to rebuild my collection (which was about 150) in better quality.
when the moment rose, I quickly snatched up a Samsung 30 inch HDTV with 3 HDMI ports, 2 HD Component, Fiber Optic audio, for 550. pretty darn good since I live in a room thats about 10x11. I also snatched up a PS3, because I figured, if i was spending this much money, I might as well get a blu ray player now that also doubled up as a video game system, and just having sold my 360, I decided it was the best investment. I started my collection with Hellboy 1 and Pan's Lab. I've only aquired 8 so far, but my recent purchases have been, Batman Begins, Cars, The Corpse Bride and soon to be The Nightmare Before Christmas. After getting back intouch with a long lost friend, He reffered me to this site. Its one of the first 5 sites I go to when I first wake up in the morning :-P I'm satisfied for turning to Blu. I don't notice a huge upscaling difference (Maybe I Have my PS3 set differently?) when playing standard DVD's on it, but I sure love the Ooh's and Aw's I get from my friends without an HD TV when they come over to hang out. I'm really looking forward to the holiday season, and purchasing such titles as Kung Fu Panda, Wall*E, The Dark Knight, Transformers, Iron Man. and many of the other movies I Can't wait to see on blu! |

I was an early adopter of both formats, but luckily for me I didn't have all that much invested in either a DVD or HD-DVD collection, so when it all came crashing down for HD-DVD, it wasn't going to be that bad for me.
I always had the feeling that Blu-ray would win, as they just seemed to have too much hardware and studio support (the Paramount dual-support defection notwithstanding), but I think HD-DVD did do some good in the format war. First of all, it forced the prices for players of both formats to go lower sooner, and secondly, it also forced Blu-ray to develop and implement features that HD-DVD had from the get-go (e.g., picture-in-picture video, online capabilities, firmware updates, etc.). I was fortunate enough to start off with a PS3, so I have been able to upgrade from the beginning. I can't imagine how outraged I would feel if I had bought one of those $1200 paperweights from the first year of Blu-ray. Talk about short-sightedness on the part of Sony. In the end, Blu-ray is probably a more future-proof format than HD-DVD could have been, and that's based on capacity alone. It's interesting to me, though, that it took a clash of the titans to get the ball really rolling. |
