Default I chose blu (early) because...

I figured it would win. That was the #1 reason and I bet it's probably the #1 reason for the vast majority of people in terms of why they went with blu or hd dvd. I guess some people may have gone with one or the other due to favorite movies ... but most I bet went with one or the other due to beliefs about which would win. I bet almost no one chose one or the other due to actual benefits of the technology (except in terms of how that figures into which would most likely win). I thought blu-ray was superior, but if I thought hd-dvd would most likely have won, I wouldn't have chosen to adopt blu; I would have adoped hd-dvd.

the ps3 had alot to do with it, seeing how ps2 helped establish dvd, but I basically followed Disney. They're way to powerful, especially in the home video department, to be fucked with!!!

I saw the early Toshiba model's at Best Buy when they first came out and I was hooked. Hd dvd didn't have all the studio's but it had the one's who made the movie's I wanted. Uni, Warner and Paramount. I had hoped that they would be able to get Fox and Lionsgate and I would have been happy. Didn't really care about Disney and knew Sony would only come around if it had too. I guess I will have to enjoy blu-ray since thing's didn't go the way I wanted. I am gonna hang onto my a-30 and enjoy it for many years though. If a movie is on both format's I will alway's purchase it on hd dvd first if possible. By the way, it is still no certainty that blu-ray won yet. Sure they beat out hd dvd. I'm starting to think that Toshiba might have just looked at the big picture and decided to cut it's losses. I think we will know if blu-ray actually won or not in a year or two if actually become's mainstream.

I chose Blu because it was pretty clear to me it would win the format war and last in the long term. This also bolsters my confidence in my belief Blu-ray will continue to grow strong, and that people like BillythePuppet are terrible at predicting the future of HDM.

But bottom line, I picked it for similar reasons the OP did. The technical advantages or disadvantages were just too small for me to care about, while it was pretty obvious to me that Blu-ray would win this one. I made that decision about a year ago, a few months after PS3 was released, and bought in then.

i went early-ish. early fall last year. mainly it was obvious blu was going to win. they had disney and fox on their side. aside from having a majority of studios on their side, disney and fox are probably the 2 biggest. hell disney alone backing your format is probably going to push you over the edge in the end. aside from that, all the pluses to blu over hd, specifically the extra disc space just made it a no brainer that an HD format that had the space for growth within the format was the way to go.

I chose both, but I have to admit that the war kind of kept me from buying a lot of movies in either format. I also think that HD-DVD did a lot of good things, like getting the prices of players down and forcing Sony to adopt and implement several of the features that HD-DVD had from the outset (e.g., picture-in-picture, firmware upgrades, online capabilities, etc.). The apparent defection of Paramount was quite an eyebrow-raiser at the time, but I had always believed that Warner held the final trump card. If they had gone HD-DVD, then this battle would still be going on, but for those of us who want HD on physical media to do well, that might not have been a good thing in the end.

I bought the PS3 for two reasons: 1) I was a gamer anyway; and 2) It was the best choice in light of the fact that Sony put out $1200 paperweights that couldn't be upgraded to either Profile 1.1 or 2.0, whereas that was no problem with the PS3. Call it a Blu-ray insurance policy that also had the advent of being a game machine. I bought the PS2 for pretty much the same reason. I went from having that as my only DVD-player, to eventually having six!!!

Now that the war is over, though, I can't wait to start really building my movie collection. Fortunately for me, I didn't have all that many DVD's in my collection, so it's not like I'm re-buying everything.

I got HD DVD the first day it was out in April 2006 and used it for a couple months until I got BD the day it came out in June 2006. But after being spoiiled by what HD DVD gave me, at half the cost of the BD, I was disappointed with what I saw the few weeks I had that Samsung player. I then returned the player and sat out of the BLu-ray Disc camp until I got a PS3 in December 2006.
Now I'm on my 7th BD player and with HD DVD BD is the only choice.
I had been waiting for HD movies on Disc since I got my first HD set in 2001, so that is why I went with both formats. I had passed on the HD tape format since I had no desire to go back to a linear format.

I stopped buying DVD's in late 2005, ok well i bought maybe 5 since, but i was saving for a house and knew that blu ray was coming, i read all i could on hd dvd and blu ray and the choice was obvious to anyone with common sense, Blu ray all the way. for starters it has 2 sylables not 5 like hd dvd people like small words. it looks better, the color blu is a more pleaseant color thatn that yucky red the other ones chose. the future capacity was going to be greater down the road, i think like 200 gb for a BD and like maybe 100 for HD DVD so that meant more data a more movies and more for home use. even though the price was more for blu ray, it appealed more to those who could afford to have HD equipment, like tv stereo and such, the ones who cant enjoy that or who havnt the means to upgrade continue with dvd good for them.

Disney did it for me in the beginning also. Whoever had disney was going to be the winner, it was as easy as predicting a hot day on a hot day. they always dictate there shelf space at wal-marts, bestbuys, targets, ect...
they're the biggest player in the game. it wasn't the specs, or all that, if hd dvd had disney in the beginning they would've won. just look at the units sold of all the POTC movies, ratatouillle, national treasure duo, cars, ect.....
