Default Why I chose to go Blu?

My story of why I chose to go Blu.

During the summer of '07 I had actually initially bought an HD-DVD add-on for my Xbox 360. At the time, my TV (Flat Screen tube) was only able to handle 720p/1080i and had no HDMI or DVI inputs (only component). While King Kong was the only HD-DVD title I owned (came free with the add-on) I was amazed with the video quality that HD-DVD was able to produce over the standard definition DVD. The only reason I decided to pick up an HD-DVD add-on was because 1. It was on sale at my local Best Buy, and 2. because I already had an Xbox 360, it was cheaper for me to go for the add-on as opposed to a standalone High Def format player (be it HD or Blu).

It was only till much later that I learned about the whole 1080p scene, HDMI, Dolby True HD, DTS-HD MA, etc, etc...

About a 3 months or so down the road, I decided that we're going to be upgrading our TV to one that can handle/output Full HD-1080p and by that time Blu-ray was gaining quite a bit of steam. I then came to realize that with the HD-DVD add-on and the Xbox 360 model I had, if I wanted to obtain 1080p via HDMI it was either impossible or far too costly! At the time, the Xbox 360 that I owned, did not have an HDMI port. So I would've had to purchase the add-on (which was upwards of $80 or so).

I decided to sell my HD-DVD add-on (since the 30 days had already passed and I was unable to return it). Luckily I ended up getting exactly what I had paid (minus the taxes).

After doing a bit of research, I came to realize that the PS3 was the best bang for my buck. Around Christmas/Boxing Day here in Canada (December 26th, it's kind of like Black Friday down in the States) Dell.ca had a sale on the PS3, which included:

40GB PS3 Package
6' HDMI Cable
1 Game (Ended up being Transformers)
All for $370.00

All of that compared to $499 for a standalone Blu-ray player, or $399 for a 1080p HD-DVD player OR $399 for a new Xbox 360 + $179 for the HD-DVD add-on... Naturally the PS3 stuck out to me like a sore thumb.

Aside from all of that, although Blu-ray wasn't perfected as yet, I always felt that it had more potential. ie: more studio support, a better selling network (ie: more companies backing it), testing of 100+gb discs, 1080p right off the bat, etc, etc.

That's my story!... After December 26th, 2007 - I was officially Blu

PS: I did end up selling my Xbox 360 to purchase one with an HDMI port. But will not be purchasing the HD-DVD add-on.

I pretty much did the same thing as you. Got the Xbox HD-DVD add-on and I was happy with it for a while. But I soon noticed that my 360 got really loud when using the HD-DVD drive, so I returned it.

I felt a annoyed that the HD-DVD add-on didn't work out for me because I really wanted a cheap way to watch HDM. I eventually bit the bullet and bought a 60GB PS3 and since then I was a Blu-ray supporter. I'm completely happy with the PS3 as a Blu-ray player...well, it would be nice to have a remote for it, but I don't want to buy it since the controller works. Glad the format war is over!

It took a long time for me to decide which way I wanted to go. It seemed that HD players were a bit cheaper than stand-alone BR players; so with that knowledge, I was going to skip BR. In each Best Buy store, I'd ask the question- which one is better.

The answers I initially rec'd was HD gives the better picture. About a month later, I asked the same question again, and this time, people were telling me they really dont know- that they dont see any huge difference regarding one format over the other.

So in essence, I decided to go Blu. Once I made up my mind, my next problem was what to buy. I made the choice of the PS3 and havent regretted that decision for a moment.

From much of what I've read, many people dont seem to realize other things that can be done with the PS3 that doesnt involve gaming. When I am not entertaining myself with a BR movie, I am hooked to the PS3 Eye playing with my grand daughter that lives on the West Coast.

I'm very happy I made this decision.

i chose blu cos of sony always being a high quality brand from day one in terms of audio and visual equipment.

They are also highly respected in Japan and have a great company structure.

I went BLU because I knew I wanted a PS3 eventually because I like games like Madden, GTA, Metal Gear, and Gran Turismo. When I won $2000 at the casino last July it made sense to buy one. They were phasing out the 80 and the 20, so I got an 80GB. My first Blu-ray was Planet Earth, and even though I only had a SDTV 27" Sony, it was awesome looking. I knew eventually I would be getting a HDTV. I started loading up slowly on Blu-Rays looking for sales and only buying new movies in BLU if available. I had 29 BluRays before buying my Sony 40" LCD 1080p HDTV in January. At that point it was on with Blu-ray, still cautiously as HD-DVD was still around. As soon as HD-DVD bit the big one, it was Blu all the way. Now I only buy TV shows or really old movies (Some Like it Hot) on regular DVD. Go BLU!!!

I bought a 60 gig PS3 before Sony and retailers completely phased it out. Backwards compatibilty is important to me since I still have dozens of PS2 games, but enough room for only one console.

I have not regretted my decision. Blu-Ray's victory over HD DVD was a relief. If HD DVD had won, PS3 may have been in trouble. I did not want my PS3 to become a 500 dollar paper weight.

For me, it was a pretty simple choise - first of all, that new Pioneer plasma had to be fed with some HD (i've got no HD channels where I live), and the PS3 with it's built-in Blu-Ray drive was just the most bang for my buck. I was contemplating getting a Tosh HD-DVD player as well, but seeing how it was getting more and more unstable, sorted to waiting out a bit. Well, we all know how that story ended

So yeah, short and simple. I'm a happy man now

Wanted a new laptop.
VGN-AR190G - the first BD enabled laptop sold in the U.S., was sitting there calling to me.
I bought one.

Like BD laptops so much(and VAIOs in general), I bought a second AR.
