Trying to decide on what to buy myself for Christmas, I decided on the add-on HD DVD player for the 360, since it was the cheapest HD DVD option. I bought that and
The Bourne Ultimatum at the same time (December 16th) at Target. I watched TBU that night, and it looked fabulous. The next day I noticed a problem—the eject button on the player didn't work. My intention was to exchange it (with a little more $$$) and get the Toshiba HD-A3, but since Target doesn't price match, I just returned it and got the HD-A3 from Circuit City.
Fast forward to last Sunday—I noticed on some gaming forum that Warner Brothers was dropping their HD DVD support. After some research, I confirmed the rumor was true, and began looking for the cheapest BD player. I ended up returning the HD-A3 and getting a Sony BDP-S300 at a different Circuit City. They let me exchange an HD DVD version of
Order of the Phoenix for the BD one.
Fast forward to Wednesday—I read on this web site about the three BD standards and how the PS3 was the only future-proof option. I went back to the original Circuit City and did yet another exchange, and added the PS3 BD remote to boot.
I got the PS3 with the intention of using it only as a BD player, but I was immediately impressed with its media player features, and the fact that it has a web browser built in and the ability to install an OS, which Sony actually sanctions. Time to download Yellow Dog....

As stated in a different thread, I'll probably rent Call of Duty 4 and compare the PS3 online community with Xbox Live.
