Default Why I’m blu and not purple

I got on the HDM bandwagon shortly after paramount went HD-DVD exclusive. Thou that’s the reason I chose blu. The reasons were the usually capacity, bandwidth, title choice. In this post I want to discuss why I’m not purple.

I’m not planning to repurchase movies I’ve bought on DVD again with the below exceptions. That’s because I can’t personally justify the cost.

• Pan’s Labyrinth
• The Lord of the Ring Trilogy
• The Matrix Trilogy

I still buy DVDs but only if I think the title in question will not be release on BD for years or not at all. I’m talking about obscure titles here, not the likes of Transformers that will not be on BD for awhile due to studio exclusivity.

Ultimately I believe there will be one winner of the HD wars and obviously, I’d like that winner to be the format I’ve chosen. The problem for me being format neutral and owning both is that like many people that love films, the money I’ve spent on discs vastly out weights the money I’ve spent on players over the years. So the idea that a cheap HD-DVD player does not appeal to me as much as protecting my investment in discs. Buying a HD-DVD player for a quick fix of seeing some of the better films available on that format certainly appeals to the impulsive buyer in me. However I don’t want to enjoy the films for 2 or so years and then find that the only way I can get a “new” player is 2nd hand over eBay.

If the blu camp hasn’t given the reds a trousers down six-of-the-best spanking this xmas then I’ll concede to my impulsive desire and get the HD-DVD add-on for the xbox 360 for the purpose of rentals.

I am an impulsive buyer. I couldn’t keep up with WB and Universal combo disc anymore.
I was tired of watching all those SD DVDs especially when the BD version was available. I went purple because I don't give a F*** about this format war anymore. That's between Toshiba and Sony or whoever want to be part of it. It's sad that I found that out so late. As a movie fan I am committed to the films exclusively not a format in particular.
I know a lot of people that have Combo VHS/DVD players and they don’t have to buy anything used from eBay. Why it should be different with HD DVD and BD?

Id still rather be neutral. i see no point in being pro to either format only. This "war" is gonna go on for years, a winner will not happen anytime soon as much as people would like to belive, and hd dvd players are going cheap as hell now, even the new HD-A3 is supposed to be 299 apparently. so why not just go purple? you could get an HD-A2 for just alittle more than the 360 add on, and yud be able to still watch HD DVD's if your 360 breaks, i have the add on now... but im getting an A2 soon after i get my ps3. Purple is the way to be.

I could not agree with you more. Purple is the better choice if you love films in HD. Makes no sense to me to purposely limit my options.

Smart man not to go purple. Eventually Blu will win and Toshiba will stop making HD-DVD players. Your current HD-DVD player won't last forever and with nobody making players there will be no way to watch the HD-DVD's you purchased while you were purple.

You realize this "eventually" you speak of may not happen for years? like 5 or even 10? or at all. so why not just get both formats and engoy all movies? some of you act as if HD DVD is just gonna die in a few weeks, thats very naive.

So you have to buy out of production players to enjoy the all-but-dead SACD and DVD Audio formats?

Times have changed and I'm sure if one happens to lose eventually, optical disc players will pick up the "dead" format as an "added value" feature, like Oppo with their relatively cheap Universal DVD/SACD/DVD-A/CD/MP3 players or a bunch of other CE manufacturers. These two formats are all that different to not include for legacy support down the road (unlike the almost entirely different LaserDisc format), especially with technology streamlining operation and compatibility of these formats with time. I can imagine Denon and other quality companies loving to include them in this fashion to justify their usual price structure. To think otherwise is being woefully shortsighted or pushing an agenda-driven bias.

"They'll stop making HD DVD/Blu-ray players if they lose!!!"

Please.

Going Neutral only pro-longs the war. HD-DVD owners that go purple are helping kill thier own format. Blu people turning are just giving them a life line. I'm not fussed who wins really. I'd like it to be Blu but I'd rather just support 1 format than waste money on both.

I am in the belief also that going neutral just pro-longs the war. I do not believe this war is going to last 5, 10, or more years. I really think that 08 things are going one way or another. There will be trickle from the loser for a bit longer but it will peater out before we hit 2010.

I believe that going neutral allows the consumer to enjoy whatever high def movie is available that they want. It is ignorant to pick sides. By supporting them, do they support you? nope.

Yes because it's all about licensing. Without toshiba licensing out its technology to manufacturers nobody can produce players capable of playing current HD-DVD disks.

No It's ignorant to support both sides! Dumping your $$$ into Blu AND HD-DVD only guarantees that you will have wasted your $$$ on a dead format. As it stands right now you are guranteed atleast 45 coasters (but more likely 64). You don't go to a roulette table and bet on red AND black!

I just dont get your logic. You are paying them money for a product so YOU are Supporting both sides. I and many others here have chosen to support one side or the other for various reasons. There are plenty of movies to watch regardless of which format you own. Some might say the quicker one side wins the quicker we can get more movies released into the market. If we all shared your mentality we would be buying dvds & divx dvds right now just so you could pick from more movies in the short term.

If they stopped releasing HD-DVDs tomorrow I'd still have my player that I could watch my movies on. I'm more worried about another superior format coming along and having to replace my collection, again.
