Default Well, my PS3 has arrived.

Couple of things. You know, first impressions and all.

The Good:
1) the finish matches my Sharp Aquos. Piano black. (note: linked to number 5 not so good).
2) It's quiet, I'd heard it was noisey, but for a game machine it's ok. (Yes, it is noisier than the a20)...except for tray opening, the PS3 is quiet.
3) disc motion is pretty smooth and quiet. It seems to boot fast. I have no BD disc to compare load times to the a20.
4) fairly easy for me to figure out the networking side of it and connect to my home wireless network (no, I don't broadcast my SID). It didn't need a wireless bridge.
5) I know how to change the HDD, if I want to.

The not so Good:
1) it is friggin huge, at least 1.5 times the size of a 2nd gen HD DVD player. I'd prefer it to sit under the a20 but you cannot put anything on top of it. So it's kind of out of place. I'll have to figure out where to put it in the av centre. The shiny fake chromy "Playstation 3"...do not want visible.
2) it don't work with my harmony. that wasn't so bright of Sony. So my wonderful press one button solution for my wife is "if you want BD, press TWO buttons ... and one of the buttons is a game controller". Note to sony, IR is ok, bluetooth is ... well ... not really standard AV.
3) No front read-outs. I'm not sure if that is a cool thing or not, but when the thing is on there isn't a counter or anything visible on it. Again, it isn't really a piece of AV equipment. It is a game machine that plays BD.
4) Three Words: Fake Plastic Chrome. I would have liked it better if it were metallic. Again, not really AV, it's like the xbox. It's plastic and plastic, with more plastic. Three different types of plastic at last count!
5) (5 good, 5 bad) Two Words: DUST MAGNET. Why, black shiny plastic. With two kids I'm already planning to buy windex to wipe it daily.

I'm going to spend this weekend playing, maybe even setup a PSN profile...but I have no games so why bother.

When I'm setup I'll take a picture and post it here. Then you can all bow down to my wonderous AV centre...except my receiver is really old now (10 yrs).

Edit: and y'all have a good night. I'm tired.

I have an HD-A20 and a PS3 but leaned red because the extras did count. Bye Bye HD, you gave it your best, that's all we could ask. Sony, finish your damn product already!

The Numbers: 900+ DVDs (rapidly declining), 34 HD-DVDs (+1 on order, + 5 free), 17 BDs (+2 on order). Last movie: Close Encounters.

Just set up the PSN, and log into the PS Store and download some game demo's. They got stuff like Tiger Woods 08, NHL 08, NBA 08, Ninja Gaiden, etc on there.

It's a good machine, try Heavenly Sword and Resistance.

for BD's Pirates 1 & 2 are the best PQ I've seen.

I think it has an elegant design, the touch panel, the hidden card readers, the nice finish.

It can get a little noisy, but not bad, if it runs warm. It will get warm if you run it without proper ventilation like in a tight space in an entertainment center.

It is a little bigger than a lot of DVD players, but then again, it is a computer. It is still the smallest item in my setup. My receiver is much larger. Believe it or not, I have a VHS player. It is the same height and 1.5 times the width.

I don't have to worry about dust because I put mine on top the VCR and cut some ventilation in the back of the entertainment center for the PS3 fans to blow air out.

It does not have front read outs, but it's pretty to easy display movie stats using the controller. Push the Select button. I personally like not having a front information panel. It's extra light and distracting if in front.

Get a PSN account. Why? Free downloads: movies trailers, game demos, game videos, and cheap fun games for purchase.
