If they could match the major retailer's prices, I'd love to buy new releases from a kiosk, but I doubt that'll happen.

chances are the kiosks will still stick you with those tiny redbox style cases and who wants to bet they won't be mailing you the proper case

no thanks not interested

While that may ring true with current previewed disc's being sold at Redbox kiosks, I am quite sure that is not the case with this concept. It looks like this new kiosk is going to offer brand-new packaged media (dvd,Blu Ray)
as it is only a matter of adjusting the kiosks current configuration (rental).
As with most readers, price dictates most of my purchases. So it remains to be seen just how competitive Redbox can be in this crowded market. My guess would be that these are intended for the "impulse purchase" crowd and will show up at convenience stores (7-11, Circle K) and perhaps Walgreen's (since they don't generally sell new dvd's). Don't be too surprised if video games start showing up in these as well.

If these were at all Walgreen's / CVS stores... I think they would do very well indeed.

Why?

Redbox has a place by being a severely low cost alternative to Blockbuster or Netflix. With the myriad of options at retail for new product who is this for?

Any redbox consumer can find new copies of almost every new release at nearly any store. My local grocery gets a dozen or more copies of every new release. Walmart gets loads more.

This product is for someone who can't wait for Amazon shipments and is inconvenienced by walking into the store they're standing outside of buying a movie from a kiosk.

Ehhhhh, pass. It might serve as a decent outlet for used DVD sales but a total waste for new titles.

I think Redbox has confused why people go to their kiosks. Not many people would go to them if they were charging just as much as Hollywood or Blockbuster for movie rentals. It’s the $1 rental that draws people, not the kiosk. They’ll have to find a way to slash new Blu-ray/DVD pricing to make this a viable option. If they’re going to charge close to MSRP (19.95 to 20.95 for new DVDs...imagine the Blu prices) then this will be a major failure.

It’s all about the rock bottom price Redbox, not the “convenience” of the kiosk.

That's a great question in terms of who this is for. The only way I see it working is if the prices in these boxes are cheaper than other retail outlets.

I live in the tech savvy Silicon Valley and Redbox is used by the poor and the extremely cheap (I am of asian descent so I can say that I am talking about asians including Indians, Orientals, Filipinos, etc). Out here in this extremely tech savvy area I still have yet to see a single Blu-Ray disc for rent in a Redbox machine, although I hear reports of it in other places (mostly SoCal). That makes me think Redbox is targeting the poor and cheap. (And this insures I'll never use Redbox).

So that would mean we are not talking about people who buy movies anyways so I don't see why they would expand into selling movies. Just expand into renting blu-rays at all kiosks, PLEASE!!

I don't believe Redbox cares about Blu-ray. If they need to up the rental charge to $1.50 to make it viable, I wish they'd get on with it already.

not to mention the hassle of returning damaged discs or unopened DVDs that you change your mind about.

also, i think it's way overpriced.
