Japanese Disney Movies To Come Bundled With Micro SD Version
Apparently Japan’s Nikkei, a media outlet specializing in technology news, announced that Disney has partnered with Panasonic to sell movies on Micro SD cards this holiday season. This of course allows playback of the media on a great deal of devices, including car GPS systems.

This comes to mind every time I hear someone being capable of watching a movie on their cell phone.
I wonder what David Lynch will have to say about any idiot who watches movies on their GPS.Last edited by MondayC; 07-24-2009 at 12:14 PM.

So what kind of DRM is going to be on these? I'm not aware of any standard DRM schema for SD based videos that are compatible with cell phones and other small devices. Are these going to be unprotected files that folks are just gonna post on the internet?

Great find! Love David Lynch. Too funny!
(I will have to send that to a few Mac/iPhone-loving addicts I know.)
Y'know, I started thinking that MicroSD maybe was shaping-up as a viable competitor to DVD & BD. To me, that is the next (last?) 'physical media step': movies on tiny flash card, so that you can carry 20 of them with you on the plane in a 2"-square box.
....of course .... then there was the (laughable) reveal of the $50/a piece price tag.

...NEXT...!

This is LONG overdue.
We've had several DVD players that come with SD card readers. It's great to see someone is finally going to experiment with it. -

I've always felt that memory card based media was the next step in physical media. To my mind, the folks that like to rent their movies would next move to digital downloads and the disc collectors/buyers would move to purchasing memory cards.
The days of disc based media may be numbered. The advantages of memory based media are huge - unlimited capacity, potentially unlimited bandwidth, smaller size (too small perhaps?), no moving parts, and already existing standards for the media.
They might be expensive compared to BD now, but the price would go down tremendously if this took off due to volume.==== 580
