well I can only imagine that they mean one of the "new" plush toy tribbles.
They certainly aren't giving out original ones.
my friend was so excited about these "new" tribble toys because they have a battery in them which makes them purr and gently rock from side to side just like on the show..
Unfortunately, he ordered one and was really pissed to find out that you can't leave the tribble turned "on" so that you could set it on a counter and let it shake and purr.
you have to be physically holding it.
the company really choked that.
I mean how cool would it be to have little tribbles purring and shaking on a counter when some geek friend came over.
also the tribbles were ridiculously large.
like 4 times the size of the ones in the episode.
so basically the whole toy was a total bust when it could have been the coolest thing ever.
they even came in three different colors.
oh well. -

That really wouldn't be true to the show to let them stay permanently on. Tribbles need constant companionship, thus it's accurate that they only purr when held. And if you saw the show, you'd know that there were multiple sizes of tribbles, some large and some small (you can even see that in the picture posted on the highdefdigest article). The last time I saw tribble toys on sale, they came in small and large sizes. I bought one that was about the size of a tennis ball. Maybe your friend just got stuck with the large size.
Seems like you and your friend both had ridiculous expectations for the toy. -
