Default Rosetta Stone language

Anyone used this program before? Seen the ads all over TV, and for sale at Borders. Wondering if it's worth the time, or if a tutor or class would be better.

It all depends on your schedule and on how you learn.

If you've checked the RosettaStone site, you'll see that the total cost of the three packs for a language isn't hugely cheaper than learning it in a class at the local community college.

Really expensive but hand's down without a doubt the best way to learn any language if you want to... I own the Full Russian Package. It's amazing.

I've played with RosettaStone a good bit on a friend's notebook, but not long enough to get a feel for how long it takes to complete all three packs for a language.

Have you finished Russian yet? How many hours per day, on average, and how many months would you say it took?

I'm not opposed to picking it up myself and snagging all three German packs, but I'm kinda wanting to know what kind of time commitment I'll be in for.

I do an hour here and there whenever I get a chance... think of it this way.. you're learning the language through "association"... you're becoming familiar with it like you did English as a baby... not by comparing an English Phrase-Book to a Babytalk Phrase-Book... if someone dropped you in the middle of Moscow and said "Goodluck"... it's the same thing... except you're learning by trial and error... several picture-games, etc get you familiar with the words and phrases without mixing any English in it to confuse you. It's perfect.. but the bottom line is everyone learns at a different rate.. it's like asking how long it will take you to walk, everyone learned at different rates.

It also depends on the time you invest in it... like in Karate, if you practice the same defensive move about 2,000 times it becomes second nature and when someone swings at you your body reacts faster then your mind because it's second nature... same thing with learning a language... the more you practice and the more time you invest into it the easier it comes to you.

I'd say go for it if you ask me... you only live once and when your older and look back on your life, you dont want to have a single regret or think "Man, I wish I woulda' tried that or learned that when I was younger and had the time."

When I decide which European country I want to move to (if all works out well), I will definitely invest in Rosetta Stone. I've heard many, many good things.

Here in Phx they offer it to all the (Maricopa) county residents for free online. You just need to get a library card. I use it for Russian and German.

For its approach to language learning and all the successes come from it, the price seems reasonable.
