It's not impossible to get Japanese nationality but I think practically you need to have very strong ties to Japan, e.g. a Japanese spouse, possibly children with Japanese citizenship and a long enough stay in Japan before applying. Japan doesn't allow dual nationalities so you would also have to give up any other nationalities as well if granted Japanese citizenship. I haven't considered applying since I don't want to give up my Finnish nationality. A colleague of mine did get Japanese citizenship recently though (originally from Taiwan).
If at least one of your parents is Japanese and you are born in Japan you do get Japanese nationality automatically.

We were just discussing this, how funny. Switzerland also has strict nationality acquisition laws, and the basis of the laws are jus sanguinis, a Latin term meaning "right of blood." In Switzerland, citizenship is only granted based on blood ties such as your parents. In other countries, like the USA the principle in law based on jus soli - "right of soil." So essentially anyone born on US soil has a right to claim US nationality. However the US also had blood rights, so even children born abroad to US parents acquire US citizenship. In Swit., just being born on Swiss soil does not confer nationality and there is no right to claim it. It's really complex.
I have more than one citizenship because of my parents and Swiss is one of them. Like kannisto, it's the one I don't intend to ever renounce. -
